Mr Paul never had trouble sleeping, but the pill took him there quickly and deeply. Deep into a maelstrom of voices and images, it was almost overwhelming, and he felt seasick. He had to concentrate until he found an image to focus on; a Chinese woman, Soo-Li, smiled as she sat astride a large black horse, trotting through a meadow. As he stared on, she reacted to his presence. ‘Who are you? And where did you come from?’ Soo-Li was clearly dreaming but this felt real. ‘You see me and hear me, so does it matter who I am?’ Mr Paul was suddenly a fan of the trip. ‘This is different, this is wrong.’ Soo-Li sensed that something was not as it should be, she felt Mr Paul’s presence. ‘When you wake, ask the desk for Ted Carter.
