Staring at the green door, Maria was rooted to the spot. What to do now? Carry on forwards or retreat? Looking back, she could see a good deal of activity around the reception desk, but no-one appeared to be looking down the corridor. Slowly, and trying to look as natural as possible without attracting attention, she walked forward. The corridor suddenly seemed full of unseen danger and her heart was racing. Her whole body felt tense, and she was hardly breathing, yet she felt drawn forwards. There was no denying that there was an element of excitement about it all, but this was unfamiliar in many ways.
