The truths unfold

The night was quiet, but my heart was anything but. For days, a storm had been brewing between me and Damien. Every time I looked at him, I wanted to believe his eyes — those stormy gray eyes that once made me feel safe. But Selene’s words echoed louder in my head than his silence ever could. I sat near the window, the dim city lights reflecting off the glass. My mind kept replaying that confrontation — the raised voices, Damien’s hurt expression, and the bitter anger that had hung between us like poison. He said he was innocent, that he loved me. But Selene… she had cried in my arms, shaking, trembling, whispering how he’d ruined her life. And how could I, after everything, ignore that? I heard the front door open faintly. My chest tightened. Footsteps followed — calm, deliberate, familiar. Damien. I didn’t turn. The air in the living room grew heavier with every second he stood there. “Elena.” His voice was deep but steady. “We need to talk.” I didn’t reply. The rain began to fall outside, tapping softly against the window. The world was quiet except for that and the sound of his breath. “Elena,” he said again, walking closer, his tone low but firm now. “Please.” I finally looked at him. His eyes were tired, his jaw clenched. He looked like a man holding the world on his shoulders. I could tell he hadn’t slept much — dark circles under his eyes, his hair slightly disheveled. “What do you want me to say, Damien?” I asked quietly. “That I believe you? That I’ll forget everything she said?” “I want you to look at me,” he said, voice rising slightly, “and tell me if you really think I could do that to anyone — let alone you.” I wanted to answer. I wanted to say no, I don’t believe it. But the image of Selene crying in my kitchen, the way she’d clutched my hand, whispering brokenly, He destroyed my life, had carved its place deep in my mind. So instead, I looked away. Something in him shifted then. His shoulders stiffened. He gave a low exhale — not of defeat, but of realization. “Fine,” he muttered, turning away. “If that’s what you choose to believe, I won’t force you. But I’ll prove it.” “Prove what?” I said bitterly. “That she’s lying?” He looked back at me, eyes blazing. “Exactly that.” --- That night, I couldn’t sleep. I lay awake, tossing under the soft sheets, feeling the distance between us like a wound that wouldn’t stop bleeding. Every sound made me jump — the creak of the stairs, the faint hum of the air conditioner. Somewhere downstairs, I could hear Damien moving. I thought he might leave — but he didn’t. He stayed. By morning, the silence between us was thicker than before. Selene had gone out early, saying she was going to “look for work.” I almost felt pity for her again. Almost. I was in the kitchen making coffee when I heard footsteps behind me. I turned — Damien stood there, holding his phone in his hand. His expression was unreadable. “Elena,” he said quietly, “you need to listen to this.” I frowned. “What is it?” “Just… listen.” He played the audio. At first, I didn’t understand what I was hearing. A muffled voice — Selene’s — came through. She was speaking quickly, almost irritated. “—you promised me double, Aaron! I did exactly what you said. She believes me now. He’s fighting with her. But if you don’t give me the money soon, I’ll tell her everything.” My entire body froze. Aaron. Aaron’s name. I pressed a hand to my mouth as Selene’s laughter echoed faintly through the speaker. “The plan is working,” she said on the recording, her voice filled with smug satisfaction. “She took me in. He’s losing control. It’s perfect.” When the audio ended, the room fell into dead silence. I couldn’t speak. I couldn’t even breathe properly. Damien’s eyes softened when he saw the shock on my face. “I didn’t know it was Aaron,” he said quietly. “But I knew she was lying. I heard her last night. She was in the garden talking on the phone. I recorded it.” I felt my knees weaken. I reached for the counter to steady myself. “She…” My voice cracked. “She used me. All this time…” He nodded, jaw tight. “She played both of us, Elena. But she didn’t work alone. Aaron was behind it.” Aaron. My heart sank further. Aaron — the man who had once promised he only wanted to see me happy. The man who had smiled so kindly, pretending to be the one who understood me. Damien stepped closer, his voice lower now, almost breaking. “You thought I hurt someone, Elena. You thought I could destroy a person’s life. Do you know what that did to me?” I looked up at him, tears brimming in my eyes. “I didn’t know what to believe,” I whispered. “I know,” he said softly, taking a step closer. “But now you do.” The weight of guilt crushed me. I remembered every time I’d turned away from him, every accusation that had slipped from my lips. “I’m sorry,” I murmured. “I should’ve trusted you.” He shook his head. “You trusted what you saw. She made sure you’d see exactly what she wanted. Don’t blame yourself.” But how could I not? I had brought that woman into our home. I had defended her. I had looked Damien in the eye and doubted his love. I turned away, my tears spilling freely now. “She lied about everything,” I whispered. “About her family, about being hurt, about… you.” Damien sighed, rubbing his temples. “I don’t know how deep this goes yet. But if Aaron is involved, it’s not just about lies — it’s about revenge.” “Revenge?” He looked up at me, eyes burning with cold fury. “He’s been trying to destroy me for months, Elena. Every time something goes wrong, every whisper, every rumor — he’s behind it. I didn’t have proof before. Now I do.” He took his phone and placed it gently in my hand. “Keep this with you. If anything happens, this recording will protect both of us.” I looked down at the phone. My fingers trembled as they closed around it. Everything inside me felt shattered — but underneath that, something new flickered to life. Determination. I wasn’t going to let Selene stay another second under this roof. --- When she returned that evening, her smile was bright and false as ever. “Elena,” she said sweetly, “you look pale. Everything okay?” I stared at her, silent for a moment. “We need to talk,” I said flatly. Her smile faltered. “Talk?” “Yes.” I glanced at Damien, who stood behind me, arms folded, watching her with quiet fury. Selene’s eyes darted between us. “What’s going on?” “Why don’t you tell us?” Damien said sharply. “Or should we play the recording?” Her expression changed instantly — from confusion to shock, then fear. “Recording?” she whispered. I stepped closer. “You lied to me,” I said, voice shaking but steady. “You used me. You said Damien hurt you, that he ruined your life. But it was you — you and Aaron. You both wanted to destroy him.” Selene stammered, “N-no, it’s not like that, I—” “Save it,” Damien snapped. “I heard you. Every word.” She backed away, hands trembling. “He made me do it! Aaron said he’d pay me—” “Get out,” I cut her off coldly. “Right now.” For a second, she looked at me — really looked at me — and I saw something dark flicker behind her eyes. “You’ll regret this,” she hissed. “You both will.” Then she turned and stormed out, slamming the door so hard it rattled the frame. The moment she was gone, silence filled the space she’d polluted for days. I leaned against the wall, feeling my heart pounding painfully against my ribs. Damien came closer, resting his hand gently on my arm. “It’s over,” he said quietly. But we both knew it wasn’t. Not really. Because Aaron was still out there — and this time, he’d gone too far. I looked at Damien, and despite the ache between us, there was something else now — unity. Trust, fragile but real. I nodded slowly. “Then we’ll end this together.” He smiled faintly, almost proudly. “That’s my girl.” And for the first time in weeks, I believed him.
