The clock ticked softly in the empty living room.
Each tick felt like a reminder of how slowly her life was passing by - day after day, with nothing changing.
Elena sat on the couch, her hands resting in her lap. The silence of the mansion was unbearable. Even the wind outside seemed afraid to enter.
She hadn't moved since Aaron left. His last words still echoed in her mind - "Then survive quietly."
A bitter smile curved on her lips.
"Quietly," she whispered to herself. "That's the only thing I've ever been good at."
She leaned back against the couch, staring at the ceiling. A tear slid down her temple, disappearing into her hair.
She used to believe that marriages healed over time - that maybe one day Aaron would look at her and see a woman, not an obligation. But three years later, all she saw in his eyes was distance.
Her chest tightened painfully.
The door clicked open and one of the maids entered carefully, holding a cup of tea.
"Ma'am, you haven't eaten anything since morning."
Elena forced a small smile. "I'm not hungry."
The maid hesitated. "You'll fall sick again."
"I'm already sick," Elena murmured, her tone soft, broken. "Just not the kind you can treat with medicine."
The maid said nothing after that - she quietly placed the cup on the table and left.
Elena's eyes drifted toward the window. Outside, the Blackwood estate stretched endlessly - gardens, pathways, and a separate guest mansion in the distance.
That house belonged to Damien Blackwood, Aaron's older brother.
Her heart gave a small, guilty flutter.
She didn't know him well - barely exchanged a handful of polite words since the wedding. But something about him had always unsettled her. He was quiet, observant, too calm for a man with such presence.
She remembered one evening, years ago, when she had dropped a glass in the dining hall. Aaron had scolded her sharply, his voice echoing off the marble walls.
And from the far end of the room, Damien had looked up - not with judgment, not with mockery - but something else entirely. Something that had made her chest tighten.
Pity.
Concern.
Warmth.
A kind of look Aaron never gave her.
She quickly shook her head now, ashamed of her thoughts. "Don't think about him, Elena," she whispered to herself. "He's your husband's brother."
But her mind didn't listen.
Every time Aaron's cruelty grew sharper, every time her loneliness deepened - she found her thoughts drifting toward Damien. His calm voice, his steady gaze. The way he carried silence - not like a weapon, but like peace.
It terrified her.
And yet, it was the only thing keeping her heart alive.
She stood and walked to the balcony, watching the distant lights from the guest mansion flicker through the evening mist.
For a moment, she thought she saw a shadow move behind one of the windows. A tall figure standing near the glass - still, almost as if he was looking toward her too.
Her heart skipped a beat.
"Elena," she whispered to herself, shaking her head. "You're imagining things."
But deep down, she knew she wasn't.
Because even from far away, she could feel it - someone was watching her. Not with disdain.
But with something dangerously close to longing.
..
The evening air was colder than usual, brushing softly against Elena's face as she stood on the balcony. The garden below glowed faintly under the golden lights that lined the pathway between the two mansions.
She wrapped her arms around herself, staring toward the guest house again. The shadow she had seen earlier had disappeared.
Maybe it was her imagination after all.
She turned to go back inside-only to freeze at the sound of footsteps behind her.
Slow. Measured.
And unfamiliar.
Elena's breath caught in her throat as she turned.
Standing a few steps away from her, in the dim light of the corridor, was Damien Blackwood.
He wasn't supposed to be here.
He rarely came to this side of the estate.
But there he was - tall, broad-shouldered, his black shirt unbuttoned just enough to show the hint of his collarbone. His eyes, a deep stormy gray, were fixed on her - calm yet unreadable.
For a moment, neither of them spoke. The silence between them felt heavy, filled with things that couldn't be said.
Elena: nervously, her voice barely steady "Mr. Blackwood... I didn't know you were back."
Damien: his tone low, deep, quiet "Damien. You don't have to call me that."
Her heart gave a small, startled jump at the sound of his voice - rough, steady, and nothing like Aaron's sharp tone.
Elena: trying to maintain distance "I-I thought you were staying abroad for business."
Damien: takes a step closer, his gaze softening "I came back last night."
Elena: nods quickly, her hands twisting together "I hope your trip went well."
He studied her for a moment. There was something guarded in his eyes, yet something deeply human too.
Damien: "You look... tired."
She blinked, her lips parting slightly. "I'm fine."
Damien: quietly "You don't look fine."
That simple sentence broke something inside her - because no one had said it before. Not even once in years.
Elena swallowed hard, looking away. "I should go. Aaron doesn't like-"
Damien: interrupting, his voice firmer now "Aaron isn't here."
The words made her stop.
He took another step toward her, close enough for her to feel the warmth of his presence but not enough to touch. His eyes searched her face, pausing at the faint redness around her eyes.
Damien: gently "Has he been cruel again?"
Her breath trembled. "Please... don't."
Damien: "Don't what?"
Elena: whispers "Don't ask questions you shouldn't."
He studied her in silence, his jaw tightening slightly. There was frustration in his eyes - not anger, but helplessness.
Damien: "He doesn't deserve to speak to you the way he does."
Elena: her eyes filled with tears again "It's my marriage, Damien. I can't-"
Damien: quiet but intense "It's also your life."
The words lingered between them like electricity.
For a moment, all Elena could do was look at him - at the way the soft light hit his face, the way his voice carried both control and care.
Something dangerous bloomed in her chest - something that made her both terrified and alive.
Elena: softly, trembling "You shouldn't say things like that."
Damien: his voice drops, low and rough "And yet, I already did."
Their eyes met - and in that gaze, a silent truth passed between them. One they could never speak of.
Then, as if realizing the weight of the moment, Damien stepped back.
Damien: quietly "Goodnight, Elena."
Elena: barely audible "Goodnight."
He turned and walked away, his footsteps fading into the corridor.
Elena stood frozen on the balcony, her heart racing painfully fast.
For years, she had prayed for someone to notice her pain.
And tonight... someone finally did.
But it wasn't her husband.
It was his brother.
