Chapter 12 — Disclosure

Elena knew the conversation with Lily could not be postponed much longer. Until now, she had been able to operate within a controlled space where decisions remained internal, contained within her own planning and execution. That space no longer existed. The pregnancy was no longer a theoretical condition managed through numbers and projections. It would begin to show, and before that happened, Lily needed to understand what was changing. Elena did not approach the conversation emotionally. She approached it the same way she approached everything else—by determining what needed to be said, what could be omitted, and how to deliver it without creating unnecessary instability. Timing mattered. That evening, she chose a moment when everything else was settled. Dinner was finished, dishes cleaned, and the apartment had returned to its usual quiet rhythm. Lily sat at the table with her notebook open, working through an assignment with the same uneven focus she always had at the end of the day. Elena watched her for a moment before speaking. “Lily,” she said, her tone calm but deliberate, “we need to talk.” Lily looked up immediately, her expression shifting with curiosity. “That sounds serious.” “It is important,” Elena corrected, taking a seat across from her. Lily closed her notebook halfway, giving her full attention now. “Did something happen?” Elena held her gaze, choosing her words carefully. “Something is going to change.” Lily’s posture straightened slightly. “Change how?” Elena did not answer immediately. Instead, she placed her hands on the table, steady and composed, reinforcing the control she needed to maintain in this moment. “I’m going to have a baby,” she said. The words were direct, without hesitation, without softening. Lily blinked, her expression frozen for a second as the meaning settled in. “A… baby?” she repeated. “Yes.” Lily leaned back slightly in her chair, processing. “You mean… you’re pregnant?” “Yes,” Elena confirmed. The silence that followed was not empty. It was filled with Lily trying to align this information with everything she understood about their life. “How?” Lily asked, the question slipping out before she could stop it. Elena didn’t react to the bluntness. “That part is not something you need to worry about.” Lily frowned, clearly unsatisfied but not pushing further. Instead, she shifted to what mattered more to her. “Is this… is this a problem?” she asked quietly. Elena answered without hesitation. “No. It has been planned.” That was not entirely true in origin, but it was true in execution. And that was the only version that mattered now. Lily studied her carefully. “Are you sure?” “Yes.” The certainty in Elena’s voice settled something, but not everything. “What happens now?” Lily asked. Elena leaned slightly forward, her tone remaining steady. “For now, things stay mostly the same. You will continue school. I will adjust my schedule. We already have the apartment secured, and financially we are stable.” Lily listened closely, her expression shifting from confusion to concentration. “So… nothing bad is going to happen?” she asked. “No,” Elena replied. “Nothing bad is going to happen.” That answer was stronger than a promise. It was a statement of control. Lily exhaled slowly, her shoulders relaxing just a little. “Okay.” The word was quiet, but it carried acceptance. After a moment, she looked up again. “Will I have to help?” Elena considered the question. “You will not be responsible. But you will be part of the household, as you already are.” “That means yes,” Lily said, a faint smile appearing. “It means appropriately,” Elena corrected. Lily nodded, then hesitated before asking the next question. “Is there… a father?” Elena’s gaze remained steady. “Yes.” “Is he coming?” Lily asked. “No.” The answer was immediate. Lily watched her for a moment, as if trying to read something beyond the words. “Does he know?” “No.” This time, the answer carried more weight, even though the tone did not change. Lily looked down at the table, absorbing that information. “Okay,” she said again, quieter now. Elena allowed a brief pause, giving her space to process. “Does this change anything for you right now?” Elena asked. Lily shook her head slowly. “I don’t think so. It’s just… a lot.” “That’s expected,” Elena replied. Another moment passed before Lily looked up again, her expression softer now. “Are you okay?” she asked. It was the first question directed at Elena, not the situation. Elena met her gaze, her answer measured but honest. “Yes.” Lily studied her, as if trying to confirm it for herself. Then she nodded. “Then it’s okay,” she said. The simplicity of that conclusion contrasted with the complexity Elena had been managing internally, but it was enough. Elena leaned back slightly, the tension she had not fully acknowledged easing just enough to register. The conversation had not destabilized anything. It had integrated. That was what she needed. Lily reopened her notebook slowly, though her attention wasn’t fully on it yet. “Can I tell my friend?” she asked after a moment. “Not yet,” Elena said. Lily looked up. “Why?” “Because it is not necessary at this stage,” Elena explained. “We will decide later what information is shared and when.” Lily considered that, then nodded. “Okay.” This time, the acceptance came faster. The structure held. Elena stood, gathering the empty glass from the table and moving toward the sink. The conversation had been direct, controlled, and contained exactly what it needed to. Nothing more. Nothing less. Behind her, Lily remained quiet for a moment before speaking again. “A baby,” she said, almost to herself. Elena didn’t turn, but she listened. “That’s… weird,” Lily added. “It is different,” Elena replied. “Yeah,” Lily agreed softly. “But not bad.” Elena allowed that statement to settle. Not bad. That was enough for now. As she finished in the kitchen, she glanced briefly toward Lily, who had returned to her homework, though more slowly than before. The adjustment had begun. And like everything else, it would be managed step by step.
