THE DAY SILENCE BROKE

1131 Words
For weeks, I had watched in silence. I had listened to the rumors, observed the strange patterns, and swallowed the confusion that slowly filled my mind. Every movement Benjamin made, every mention of Bukky’s name, every trip that seemed unnecessary—it all stayed in my thoughts like pieces of a puzzle I could not yet solve. But silence has its limit. There comes a day when a heart that has endured too much can no longer pretend that everything is normal. That day finally came. It was a morning that began like any other. The house was quiet, and I moved around carrying out my usual duties. Nothing in the air warned me that before the day ended, my life would take a turn I would never forget. I noticed Benjamin moving around the house differently that day. He was gathering things, arranging items, and bringing out some foodstuffs that were usually kept carefully in storage. At first, I watched from a distance. But as he continued packing more items—rice, garri, dried food, and other provisions—it became clear that he was preparing for a journey. The sight immediately stirred something inside me. Where was he going with all those things? And why had he not mentioned any travel plans to me? For a moment, I tried to ignore the questions forming in my mind. Perhaps there was a simple explanation. Perhaps I was overthinking again, allowing the rumors and whispers of people to poison my thoughts. But the longer I watched him pack, the stronger my uneasiness became. Finally, I walked closer. “Benjamin,” I said quietly, trying to keep my voice calm, “where are you going with all these things?” He did not answer immediately. He continued arranging the items as if he had not heard me. I repeated my question. “Where are you going?” This time he looked up briefly. “Just somewhere,” he replied shortly. His answer only deepened my concern. “Somewhere?” I asked again. “Since when do you travel without telling your wife where you are going?” The room suddenly felt tense. Benjamin straightened up and looked at me with irritation in his eyes. “Why are you asking too many questions?” he said sharply. His tone surprised me. I was not shouting. I was not accusing him. I was simply asking a question any wife would ask. “I am not asking too many questions,” I replied. “I only want to know where my husband is going.” Instead of calming down, his anger grew. “Must I explain every movement to you?” he snapped. His words cut deeper than I expected. All the weeks of silence I had kept suddenly rose inside me like a storm that had been waiting to break. “Benjamin,” I said, trying to control the shaking in my voice, “people are talking. They say they see you traveling with Bukky. They say many things. I have kept quiet, but today you are packing food as if you are going somewhere important. Don’t I deserve to know the truth?” The moment Bukky’s name left my mouth, the atmosphere in the room changed completely. Benjamin’s face hardened. “You are listening to gossip now?” he said angrily. “I am not listening to gossip,” I replied. “I am asking my husband for the truth.” What happened next unfolded so quickly that even today, remembering it still feels like watching a terrible scene I could not stop. Benjamin suddenly moved toward me with a force I had never seen before. Before I could step back or understand what was happening, his hand struck me. The blow was strong and unexpected. Pain shot through my face, and I stumbled backward. For a moment, the world around me spun. I tried to steady myself, but another push sent me losing balance again. My head felt heavy, and I could feel something warm running down my face. When I touched my nose, my fingers came away covered in blood. Blood was pouring from my nose. I remember feeling shocked more than anything else. This was the man I had trusted. The man whose home I had entered believing we would build a life together. Yet in that moment, he stood before me as someone I barely recognized. My nose continued bleeding heavily. The pain in my head grew sharper, and I struggled to stay steady. But what hurt even more was the realization that the argument had crossed a line that could never truly be erased. Benjamin looked at me briefly, but his anger did not seem to disappear. Instead of helping me or showing concern, he turned back to the items he had been packing. That moment broke something deep inside me. Even in pain, I watched him finish preparing for his journey. He did not ask if I was alright. He did not apologize. He simply continued with his plans. The room felt colder than it had ever felt before. I tried to stop the bleeding, pressing cloth against my nose while sitting quietly. Inside me, confusion, pain, and disbelief mixed together. How had our home reached this point? How had a simple question led to violence? When Benjamin finally left the house that day, the silence he left behind felt heavier than any argument. I sat there alone, still trying to steady myself, still feeling the throbbing pain in my head. At that time, I did not fully understand what had happened inside my body. I only knew that the injury was serious. The bleeding eventually slowed, but the pain in my head remained. Days passed, but strange symptoms began to appear. Headaches came more frequently. Sometimes I felt a strange numbness around parts of my head and face. Other times the pain seemed to travel in ways that frightened me. What happened that day was not just a moment of violence. It became the beginning of a long and difficult journey with my health. Years later, the damage from that injury would lead to serious nerve problems in my head. Doctors would eventually tell me that surgery was necessary to deal with the complications that had developed over time. But on that day, I did not yet know how far-reaching the consequences would be. All I knew was that the silence I had kept for so long had finally broken. And when it broke, it left wounds that were deeper than anyone around me could see. That day was not just the day my nose bled. It was the day my life quietly began to change in ways I would only fully understand many years later.
