Chapter 6: Reading for the Die Hearts

1304 Words
It took a while to get to Blaze’s home. Maybe half an hour, but it felt like forever as we had sat in silence. There’s not a whole lot of radio stations that reach out here in Grimhaven. Oddly the same goes for tv stations too. But what do you expect from a mostly middle of nowhere town hidden in the forest? I honestly got lost in my thoughts. Curious of what the rest of Blaze’s home may look like, what else does his family have hidden. Do they do experiments to learn more, like Scientists will? How do they perform their studies? So much I thought of, but not a word of it was said to him as he drove. At this point, the yellowy white light of the sun peered through the millions of pine trees. As if it’s trying to peak down at the ground and road we drove on. Still staring out the window in a daze, I noticed we stopped and heard the car engine turn off. I looked up and over at Blaze who was just sitting there. He was just smiling warmly, his eyes seeming full of puppy love. I blushed a tiny bit, it seemed cute. But the silence was getting a bit awkward. “Hey, uh, Blaze? You alright?”, I asked with concern, even though I knew why he was most likely staring. He shook his head and looked at me again. His expression looked a bit sincere and vulnerable, especially with the blush that creeped up on his face. “Y..yeah. Just, you really don’t look like most of the girls in our town…”, he said almost stuttering, he blushed a bit more as well. If he blushed anymore, he might end up looking like a tomato. I know I don’t look like anyone in this town really. Especially since the stereotype of this place is tan to dark skin tones and all the shades of brunette and black hair. I looked away. “Yeah, I know. I stick out like a sore thumb to be honest.”, I pouted a little, kind of annoyed he even pointed out my appearance the way he did. “You stick out more like a unicorn, mystegic and elegant.”, he said with confidence, which shook me and made me question if this was his attempt to hit on me. “You’re just weird...let's go inside already.” He chuckled, a little nervously, and nodded. I raised my eyebrow a little in curiosity at his nervousness, but he left the vehicle before I could ask if he was alright. I sighed and got out as well and followed after him into his house. Now that I think about it, I should have known this was his house the first time I was here. I knew he was the son of the Mayor and Principal of our school. Which should have meant the fanciest mini mansion in town would no doubt belong to them. I mean, look at this place, it's a luxury in modern times. Blaze looked over at me as I had lost myself to my thoughts again. He chuckled when he noticed I was admiring his home. “It’s surely a gem in this town compared to some of the homes,” he smiled gently, “it was just recently reaventated a year or so ago. If one thing I’ve noticed about my parents is they love flaunting their wealth.” He looked down a little, sighing to himself in a bit of sadness. I once again wondered what may be on his mind. And of course before I could ask, he turned towards his house. He gently took my hand and led me inside his house though, which took me off guard. As I entered, this time I noticed how spacious his house really was. I looked at my surroundings. The floor was some sort of polished wood, it looked really expensive. The walls were a plain sky blue with fancy white trimming. The ceiling was just a giant window to the sky above. And below that was the spiral staircase leading to the second floor and it’s landing, all of it appeared to be made of the same polished wood as the floor. Even the railing and fencing to keep you safe seemed super fancy. To tie it all together though, was a rose gold chandelier hanging in the center of the ceiling somehow. It almost looked antique. Why was I even admiring his house anyways? I shook my head, and he continued to gently lead me to the kitchen. He then opened a pantry door, which led to a small storage room, filled with spices and dry foods. However, there was a shelf that appeared a little fake compared to other pantry shelves of food and spices. It wasn’t super noticeable unless you were staring it down to begin with. He finally let go of my hand, as he lifted a strange thing of spice off one of the top shelves. Then the entire shelf went down before my eyes, not making a sound nor the other things on it moving or rattling. Revealing a staircase down, the lighting was dim from there. He began walking down the stairs, and even though I felt uncomfortable, I followed. … It has been maybe three hours now since I began reading the first dozen books of history behind the belief and upcoming of werewolves and their secret society. The giant room I was in had to be at least a few dozen feet underground, you couldn’t even see daylight or hear anything of the above world if you tried. There was a section dedicated to all sorts of things. From books of history behind almost every supernatural race that was known of. Oddly though, the smallest section was “Vampires”. Apparently little to none is known about them, besides they exist. But I haven’t begun to touch the other sections other than ask about them. “I wonder how long I’ll be reading.” I thought to myself quietly. As if on cue to my question, Blaze turns up from scouring the book shelves for things to help me further learn about the world he lives in. And unfortunately now the world I live in too. “How’s reading? What book are you on now?”, he asked curiously. Raising an eyebrow and all. “Pretty fascinating and kind of horrifying. Not gonna lie, werewolves have either had a horrible time, or been the cause of horrible things.”, I said simply. Feeling both sorry and slightly upset at the knowledge I’ve gained. It truly wasn’t a lie, werewolves have been tortured and experimented on in the past, hundreds of years ago. All for simply existing and the human race being curious. But werewolves have also destroyed entire kingdoms back then, erasing them from existence for the fact people have tortured and experimented on them. “Yeah, neither party was in the right. But that’s what history is for, and why we document it.”, he smiled slightly. Placing a small stack of the remaining books on werewolves and their background, on the wooden table I was sitting at. “You read a lot faster than I do, I noticed.”, he chuckled a little. I just shook my head and rolled my eyes, going back to finishing the book I was reading. My fascination never ends along with the amount of books to read.
