Jackson’s POV
I’m not sure where me and Declan’s friendship went wrong. Back in middle school we were best friends. He used to come over to my house every Friday to play video games, then on the worst day of my life he ignored me. We’ve ignored each other ever since. I focused on school and he joined the meatheads we used to complain about together. It’s been three years now but the wound still feels fresh. None of my friendships have been the same since, but maybe that’s because he wasn’t a regular friend.
From the moment I saw Declan I fell in love with him. He was tall and muscular even for a middle schooler, he had perfectly tanned skin with brown hair and brown eyes. The epitome of tall, dark, and handsome. He was my complete opposite really, I was average height, rather scrawny, pasty, and had unruly blonde hair. Not much has changed for either of us. I’m not handsome or pretty, while he is both handsome and gorgeous. I knew from the moment I saw him he was going to break my heart but frankly I was shocked it happened before he even found out I was gay.
I knew he was too cool for me so I never understood why we were friends, but that also means I didn’t really need an explanation when he ghosted me in real life. It was the last day of middle school so I guess he just wanted to start fresh for high school, become mr.popular. He joined the hockey team and quickly climbed the ranks to top dog of the meatheads.
“What are you still doing on the ice? Hurry up and get off so the water boy can go home.”
Phillips word interrupt my train of thought. I’ve been zoned out watching Declan skate, thinking about our friendship. Nobody else would dare tell Declan what to do but Declan and Phillip are co captains of the team. I assume they’re not close because Declan doesn’t respond, only glares up at Phillip, completely ignoring me. He starts skating off the ice, towards me, I scurry to grab a water bottle for him but he puts on his blade protectors and walks right past me.
I am nothing to him. Not even worth acknowledging.
“ Don’t take it personal, most of the teams annoyed we got a male trainer. They’ll get over it in a day or two. I’m sure you give much better massages then the female trainers.”
Phillip said that last part with a wink and I am thoroughly confused.
“ Well I’ll do my best” I respond sheepishly.
“ Just a heads up Jackie, Declan tends to stay after practice. I know you’re not really supposed to leave until all the players are off the ice but that guy is ridiculous. I can talk to the head honcho so you don’t get in any trouble for leaving before him.”
“No!”
Oh no, did that sound too eager? It’s been three years, obviously I’m over him.. but for some reason I can’t waist this opportunity to be around him.
“I mean.. I really don’t mind. This is my responsibility. I knew what I was signing up for.”
“Wow, so professional. Well honestly I’m actually glad we got a male trainer. I’m pretty sure all these female trainers have been giving Declan the full service if you know what I mean. Maybe now he’ll leave on time. Or at least focus a bit more.”
If Declan didn’t hate me before he definitely does now. Not only has he successfully ignored me for three years but now he’s gonna be forced to see me everyday. Not to mention he knows how I feel about hockey and I’m also in the way of him getting “fully serviced”. This is going to be a long season.
