Chapter 4
Aisling POV
"Head to the house while I go get you a morning after pill," Tina ordered as soon as we stepped foot in New York.
"And some Tylenol too. My head hurts like a bitch.” I can’t remember drinking that much, but why does my head hurt like hell? “Ugh."
"We are running late," Dexter glanced at his watch, tapping his foot against the ground, "Your uncle is going to kill me."
Glaring at him, I bit out. "Unless he wants me to meet my brand-new fiancé looking like death warmed over, he had better learn to exercise some patience. Take me back to my apartment. I need a shower and a change of clothes."
"You're going to get me in trouble," he grumbled, but he pulled the car around in the direction of the apartment I shared with Tina.
Thirty-five minutes later, the car pulled up in front of our brownstone and I slipped out of the car and made my way into the house.
Just as I opened my door, I froze as I saw my uncle's stiff smile, "Hello, Aisling."
"Uncle," I clenched my jaw. "What are you doing here?"
"You shouldn't dress like a slut," another male voice snapped at me. "You know how much I hate it."
Turning my head slowly, I met the dark beady eyes of my soon-to-be fiancé. The man who had bought me liked some cattle from the butcher. At forty-three, Amos Linwood was nineteen years older than me. He had a cruel face, crueler eyes and a holier than thou attitude.
He castigated me for being a slut on one hand, while his leery eyes still ran over my body, making my skin crawl.
"And don't you know I hate to be kept waiting?" He snapped yet again, his voice as sharp as a whip. "The next time you keep me waiting for you, you won't like the consequences, Aisling."
I gritted my teeth to keep my bitter words in.
My soon-to-be fiancé didn't need to remind me of what was at stake if I didn't dance along to his tune. He had my mother locked away in a mental facility, and he had made it very clear that one wrong move on my part, he would have her care-taker pump her full of drugs till she overdosed and met an unfortunate end.
As far as I was concerned, my mother was the only family I had left, and I had to do anything to protect her. Including marrying a man who was almost twice my age and who planned to beat me into submission.
Amos had promised me that I could see my mother as a wedding gift and I couldn't wait till I could feel my mother's arms around me again.
"We thought you had run away so we had to come check for ourselves." My uncle smirked at me. "But I told Amos that you wouldn't do something that stupid. You're not a stupid girl at all."
"I wouldn't be marrying her if she was," my fiancé, who is much shorter than any of us here guffawed.
"Where were you?" My uncle demanded, his gaze narrowed suspiciously on me.
I swallowed roughly, trying to think of a lie, "I went out to celebrate my upcoming birthday since I won't be able to after today."
"I would think that our marriage is a better thing to celebrate than something as silly as a birthday," Amos glared at me.
My uncle, Daniel snorted, "More like you were out in the town spreading your legs for every man like the slut you are. Just like your mother."
"Keep my mother's name out of your damn mouth," I snarled in anger.
He chuckled, "I can't wait for your husband to tame all that brattiness out of you. Did you know that he's talented in breaking little, spoiled girls like you?"
The shorter man's eyes glittered with delight at the thought of beating me into submission.
I hadn't told Tina the full extent of how evil Amos Linwood was because I didn't want her to worry. It was only Dexter and I that knew that in the course of saving my mother, I might not survive this marriage.
What choice did I have though? I couldn't just leave my mother in the hands of these bastards. I thought in resolute.
The worst part was that I knew that if my dear mother ever found out what I was going through for her sake, she could put a bullet through her own head to set me free. Which was why I never planned to tell her the truth.
"She'll be a real challenge, but it's a task I'm willing to carry out to the best of my abilities," Amos laughed, "You've really given me my money's worth Daniel." He praised my selfish uncle.
"It was a pleasure doing business with you as always." My uncle was on the top of his game and lavish on his achievement.
My fingers curled into fists at my side, my sharp nails biting into the flesh of my palm and breaking the skin. The physical pain was the only thing that was successful in distracting me from the emotional turmoil.
How dare these assholes talk about me like I wasn't a person with full human rights? I wasn't an investment or a piece of property! I was a goddamn person.
Just as my anger began to bubble to the surface, there was a knock on the door.
All eyes turned to the door and my face drained of all color, my heart began to beat fast. I began to pray that it wasn't Tina at the door. I didn't want my sweet best friend anywhere near these evil men.
What if Amos suddenly shifted his focus to her? That thought crossed my mind and I shook my head in an attempt to kill the thought. Tina couldn't defend herself against an animal like him.
The door slid open slowly, revealing an imposing figure. The suited man stepped forward into my apartment and I blanched, my jaw dropping to the ground.
No. This couldn't be.
A familiar blue eyes fixed on me for a second before his eyes slid away and fixed on a spot behind me.
"Hello, brother," the blue-eyed man whose bed I had just snuck away from a few hours ago addressed my soon-to-be fiancé.
