Chapter 5: Playing Close

624 Words
Elena didn’t change overnight, that would have been suspicious, instead she became better. More attentive, more present, more everything. Adrian had quietly stopped expecting from her. “Did something good happen?” he asked one evening, watching her as she set dinner down.Elena glanced up, a soft smile on her lips.“Do I need a reason to be in a good mood?”Adrian studied her for a second longer than necessary, like he was trying to figure her out again.Good.Because confusion was the first step. She laughed more easily now, touched him more often.Looked at him like she still saw a future. And Adrian—Relaxed.Whatever small suspicion he had before began to dissolve.Because in his mind, Elena was still exactly where he left her, unaware ,A few nights later, Elena leaned into him on the couch, her fingers tracing absent patterns against his arm.“Do you ever think about us?” she asked softly.Adrian glanced down at her. “What do you mean?” “The future,” she said, her voice light. “Where we’re going… what we’re building.”A pause, small, but noticeable.Adrian shifted slightly. “Yeah… sometimes.” Sometimes, not always, not certain.Elena nodded slowly, like that answer satisfied her.But inside—She noted it.Stored it.Because now she knew—He wasn’t just lying. He was detaching.Perfect. Elena didn’t go looking for Sophia again. She positioned herself instead. The same café,same time. Two days later. And just like before,Sophia walked in.This time, Elena didn’t just observe. She stood, walked past her. Then “accidentally” bumped her shoulder.“Oh—sorry,” Elena said quickly, turning back.Sophia smiled lightly. “It’s fine, don’t worry.”Her voice was softer than Elena expected, warmer.Elena paused for just a second.Long enough to seem genuine.“Are you sure? I wasn’t paying attention.”Sophia shook her head. “Really, it’s okay.”Their eyes met properly this time, not just a passing glance. And for a brief moment,Elena saw it clearly. There was no deception in Sophia’s expression. No awareness,no hidden agenda.Just a woman living her life.“Can I at least buy you another coffee?” Elena asked, tilting her head slightly.Sophia hesitated. Then smiled. “You don’t have to, but… sure.” Hooked. They sat together, strangers, talking . “What do you do?” Sophia asked casually.Elena gave a simple answer—nothing too revealing.Nothing too vague, just enough. And Sophia responded easily.Comfortably,Which made one thing painfully obvious. She had no idea, not about Elena, not about Adrian, not about the life she was about to walk into.Elena listened more than she spoke.Observing, studying, learning . And the more Sophia talked…The clearer it became. She wasn’t the villain, she was just another piece on the board. Hey, Sophia.”The voice came from behind them.Male, confident, familiar .Sophia turned immediately, her face lighting up slightly.“Oh—hey.”Elena followed her gaze. And saw him.Tall, sharp, composed in a way that felt intentional. Not loud, but noticeable. He stepped closer, his eyes briefly landing on Elena before returning to Sophia.“Didn’t expect to see you here,” he said.Sophia smiled. “I could say the same.”There was history there, not romantic, but not distant either.“Join us?” Sophia added.Elena didn’t react. But she was listening, watching .Because something about this—Felt useful. He pulled out a chair and sat.“Didn’t know you had company.” Sophia gestured lightly. “This is—”She paused.Because Elena hadn’t given her full name.Elena smiled faintly.“Elena.”His gaze shifted to her again. This time, more direct, more assessing. “Elena,” he repeated. There was something in his tone.Subtle, but there.Like he wasn’t just seeing her—But reading her.And for the first time since this started—Elena felt it.A shift she hadn’t planned.Because this man, wasn’t easy. And he definitely wasn’t unaware. For the first time since the game began… Elena realized she might not be the only one paying attention.
