Chapter Nine: Forbidden Bonds

448 Words
The house was quiet that night—a rare and fleeting moment of peace. Harper stood at the edge of the grand balcony, the cool night air brushing against her skin. The stars were faint, barely visible against the weight of the moonlight, but she found solace in their presence nonetheless. She didn’t hear Elias approach, but she felt him. His presence was undeniable, a gravitational pull that seemed to defy explanation. “You should be resting,” Elias said softly, his voice carrying an unspoken concern. Harper turned to him, her lips curving into a small, tired smile. “I don’t think the house would let me rest, even if I wanted to.” Elias’s expression darkened, his gaze dropping to her arm where the mark pulsed faintly. “The house isn’t trying to hurt you,” he said. “It’s trying to prepare you.” “For what?” Harper asked, her voice sharper than she intended. “For a lifetime of fighting shadows? For losing myself in this cursed place?” Elias stepped closer, his stormy eyes locking onto hers. “For becoming something greater than you ever imagined. This isn’t just a curse, Harper. It’s a gift. One your family has carried for generations.” Harper’s chest tightened, her emotions swirling in a chaotic storm. She wanted to push him away, wanted to scream at the unfairness of it all—but she couldn’t. Instead, she let the vulnerability wash over her, let herself feel the weight of his words. “What happens if I can’t do it?” Harper asked, her voice barely above a whisper. “If I fail?” Elias’s hand brushed against hers, his touch electric. “You won’t fail,” he said firmly. “Not while I’m here.” Harper’s pulse quickened, her breath hitching as his presence enveloped her. She didn’t know why she trusted him, why she felt drawn to him despite the danger surrounding them—but she did. And then, without thinking, she closed the distance between them. Her lips met his in a fleeting moment of desperation and longing, a moment that felt like it would shatter the world. Elias’s breath caught, but he didn’t pull away. Instead, he deepened the kiss, his hand settling on her arm where the mark pulsed brighter than ever. The house seemed to hum around them, its whispers shifting into a haunting melody. When they finally broke apart, Elias’s gaze held hers, intense and unwavering. “This changes everything,” he said quietly. Harper nodded, her heart pounding. She didn’t know what the future held, but she knew one thing for certain—she couldn’t face it alone.
