Sophie's tears fell onto the journal pages as she wrote about her parents' shattered relationship. She couldn't comprehend how love had turned to dust.
Days passed, and Sophie's mother, Rachel, recovered in rehab. Sophie visited her, holding back tears.
"Mom, why did Dad leave?" Sophie asked, her voice trembling.
Rachel's eyes filled with regret. "I'm sorry, sweetie. Your father and I grew apart. We wanted different things."
Sophie's heart ached. "But what about me? Didn't he love me enough to stay?"
Rachel's face contorted in pain. "Sophie, he loves you, but sometimes love isn't enough. People make mistakes, and we have to move forward."
Sophie nodded, unsure if she could forgive.
As Rachel recovered, Sophie began rebuilding her life. She joined a school club, found solace in art, and leaned on Mia.
But the question lingered: Why didn't Dad respond?
One evening, Sophie decided to confront him.
She marched to the phone, dialed his number, and took a deep breath.
"Dad, why didn't you come when Mom was in the hospital?" Sophie asked, her voice firm.
The line went silent.
"Dad, are you there?"
His hesitant voice replied, "Sophie, I...I didn't know what to do. I'm sorry."
Sophie's anger boiled over. "Sorry? Sorry isn't enough! You left us, Dad. You broke Mom, and now she's fighting to live."
The line remained silent.
Sophie's tears streamed down. "Dad, do you still love me?"
A pause, then a whispered, "Yes, Sophie. I love you."
Sophie's heart swirled with emotions.
Sophie's eyes narrowed. "What were you doing that day, Dad? Why didn't you come?"
Her father's sigh echoed through the line. "Sophie, I...I was with someone. I didn't know how to face you or your mom."
Sophie's heart sank. "Someone?" she repeated, her voice cold.
Her father hesitated. "Yes, Sophie. I've been seeing someone else. I'm sorry."
The truth cut deep. Sophie felt betrayed.
"You were with another woman while Mom was dying?" Sophie spat, anger and hurt mixing in her voice.
Her father's voice cracked. "Sophie, please understand—"
"No, Dad. I won't understand. You cheated on Mom, left us, and now you're with someone else?" Sophie's tears streamed down.
Her father's silence was deafening.
Sophie slammed the phone down, her heart shattered.
Mia found Sophie crying in the school bathroom.
"Soph, what happened?" Mia asked, concern etched on her face.
Sophie wiped her tears. "My dad...he was with another woman that day. He cheated on my mom."
Mia hugged Sophie tightly. "I'm so sorry, Soph. You deserve better."
Sophie's anger simmered, but Mia's words sparked determination.
Mia grasped Sophie's hands, her eyes sparkling with determination. "Soph, I want you to forget about your dad's betrayal. You deserve happiness."
Sophie raised an eyebrow. "How am I supposed to do that?"
Mia smiled mischievously. "Leave that to me."
The next day, Mia dragged Sophie to lunch in the school cafeteria.
As they sat down, Sophie noticed a guy sitting across from them, his piercing brown eyes locked onto hers.
"Who's that?" Sophie whispered to Mia.
"That's Kelvin," Mia replied, her voice barely above a whisper. "He's charming, funny, and perfect for distracting you from your worries."
Sophie blushed, feeling a flutter in her chest.
Kelvin caught her gaze again, flashing a captivating smile.
Mia nudged Sophie. "Go talk to him."
Sophie hesitated, but Mia's encouragement propelled her forward.
"Hey," Sophie said, approaching Kelvin.
"Hi," Kelvin replied, his voice warm. "I'm Kelvin."
"Sophie," she said, her heart racing.
As they talked, Sophie found herself laughing, feeling carefree for the first time in months.
Kelvin listened attentively, his eyes sparkling with interest.
When the bell rang, signaling lunch's end, Sophie felt disappointed.
"Want to grab coffee after school?" Kelvin asked, his smile hopeful.
Sophie's heart skipped a beat. "Yeah."
Mia beamed with approval as Sophie returned to their table.
"I told you he'd be perfect," Mia whispered.
Sophie blushed, her mind whirling with excitement.
That afternoon, Sophie and Kelvin strolled through the park, sipping coffee.
They talked about everything – school, music, dreams.
Sophie felt a connection she couldn't ignore.
As the sun dipped below the horizon, Kelvin walked Sophie home.
At her doorstep, he turned to her, his eyes shining.
"Can I see you again tomorrow?" he asked.
Sophie's heart soared. "Yes."
With a gentle smile, Kelvin leaned in, his lips brushing against hers.
Sophie's world spun, her worries fading into the background.
For the first time in months, she felt alive.
Over the next few weeks, Sophie and Kelvin grew inseparable.
They explored the city, attended concerts, laughed together.
Mia cheered from the sidelines, thrilled to see Sophie happy.
Sophie's mother, Rachel, noticed the change too.
"Sophie, you seem happier," Rachel said, her eyes filled with concern. "What's changed?"
Sophie hesitated, unsure if she should reveal Kelvin.
But Rachel's genuine interest put her at ease.
"I met someone, Mom," Sophie said, her voice barely above a whisper.
Rachel's face softened. "Tell me about him."
Sophie smiled, sharing stories of Kelvin's kindness and humor.
Rachel listened, a warm smile spreading across her face.
"I'm glad you're happy, Sophie," Rachel said. "You deserve it."
As Sophie drifted off to sleep that night, she realized Mia had been right.
Kelvin had distracted her from her worries.
But more importantly, he'd shown her love and happiness were possible.
