CHAPTER 26
I OVERSLEPT THE next morning, having managed to fit in an extra nightmare where I was being skinned alive while Tabby and Sam watched on without moving, and by the time I got into the kitchen Sam and Jed were talking with Xav and Logan, already dressed in combat gear.
“How was Guatemala?” I asked Xav.
“A bust. Sorry. But don’t give up hope. If anyone can find her, it’s Dan and Black.”
He headed out, leaving me two feet away from Sam with no choice but to speak to him.
“Hi.”
He motioned back to the table. “I made you toast, but it’s cold now.”
What did toast mean? “Thanks.”
We stood there awkwardly until he moved towards the door.
