CHAPTER 29 SAM WAS WAITING in the hallway when we arrived back, and one look at my face was enough to drain the hope from his eyes. “It wasn’t her,” he said. “No.” “We found two other missing girls,” Emmy told him, trying to soften the blow. “Are you serious?” “You’ve seen Fern Fletcher on the news?” “Yeah. Fuck.” He rubbed his eyes, and from the looks of him, he hadn’t had much sleep either. “That’s who you found? Alive?” “She was okay, physically.” But mentally? How long would those scars take to heal? And Summer’s? My heart bled for my own daughter, just like Zacharov’s would when I got near him. “I need sleep,” I mumbled, heading for the stairs and leaving Sam behind. Let the nightmares begin. A knock at the door woke me, and I groaned as I stretched my arms over my head. “
