The dark side of human beings

787 Words
The ruffling of footsteps through the leaves was the first sign of doom. I climbed on the couch in front of the window to look where it was coming from. Secretly I hoped it was Logan coming back to apologize and tell me our friendship was more important than the whole wolf hate thingy. The moment I saw his blond hair appear between the twigs made me release the breath I didn’t know I was holding. Except he was not alone. With him were his father, uncle, and a couple of other men which I knew were living in the village. I took a step back when realization began to dawn. He sold me out rather than saving our friendship. My father turned around on the couch to see what I was whining about. He immediately pulled me off the armrest of the couch and yelled for my mother to run away. I looked at my father with a look of confusion. I, with my stupid head was still thinking we could just talk to them, I mean, we all live in the same village, right? They wouldn’t just hurt us out of nowhere, would they? I jumped to reach the armrest again, only to be held in mid-air by my father. Even though in this little moment of looking through the window, I had seen the thing that changed everything. They had guns. As I started to run away, I heard a gun being loaded and fired. Time seemed to slow down and the shards of the glass of the windows shattered through the room. My father dived to the ground but was still hit in his shoulder because of the first bullet. My mother, who was packing the most important stuff, ran to the kitchen while screaming for me to follow her. I couldn’t rip my eyes off my father as he was shot again. This time in the head. The impact of the bullet made me jump back in fear. My mother ran into the room and grabbed me by the neck and dragged me out of the room. The front door collapsed as we entered the kitchen. My mother changed into her wolf form and took a small bag in her mouth. Then she dived through the doggy door in the kitchen door with me following her. We ran further into the woods and the footsteps behind us seemed to be at a great distance. My lungs were feeling like they would collapse. I couldn’t take it anymore and slowed my pace. I needed some air as this was my first actual run in this form. My mother slowed down as well, still on high alert. We walked on for some minutes until we stranded at a small river. Thirsty as hell I walked to the calm flowing water. I took some sips of the refreshing water, already feeling a bit better when my mother joined me for a drink. She looked me into my eyes and all I saw was sadness. I just lost my father which was terrible, but I could never fully understand how hard it had to be for my mother to leave her mate behind in our own house. She stared into the water and bent her paws to lay down when something changed into the atmosphere. It was silent. To silent. No birds were singing and no crickets were to be heard which was suspicious this time a year. My mother changed back into her human, naked form as she walked to me. She raised a hand to pet me over my head as her eyes only looked at me for one second before shooting back at the trees. I still remember her last word to me. “When I say run, you run as fast as you possibly can. Go north, further to the packs and animals. They will provide safety when I can no longer provide you that. Promise me you will do as you told?” She gave me one last look and when she saw me give a quick nod, she knew I understood. “Please, remember I love you, sweetie, no matter what, I will always be with you”. While saying this she stood up straight with her head held high. She took a couple of steps to stand in front of me while I started hearing voices. The first one was a male, screaming “here, here” to give our position to the rest of the men. I tried to sign to my mother that we had to run, but the men already had us encircled. There was no way to run. This was the moment the last guardians of Evanacliffs would come to die.
