The next generation

921 Words
My grandfather showed my grandmother the prettiest places in the forest and even went on his knees for her which she accepted with tears of joy in her eyes. They were going to get married in July. She even got pregnant with him. They were happy while living in a small cottage close to the forest. What he had not told her was the truth of his nature. She didn’t know that the dangerous wolf she heard about years ago was sleeping right next to her. On a cloudy Monday morning, they went out to the market together for the first time. She was 8 months pregnant at the time. Everything went fine. He even had fun, which he never thought he would feel while being in the village after they beheaded his father in front of his eyes. Unfortunately, everything changed when they went to order a cup of coffee on the patio of a café. The waiters saw the tattoo behind my grandfather's ear and dropped the serving tray. Cups fell and broke into tiny pieces as she stood still with an anxious expression, unable to move. My grandfather tried to look around to figure out the source of what spooked her when he noticed people started to whisper around them. Every once in a while, they pointed in his direction and some people even left hurriedly. Fear crept deep into the core of this body when he understood what they were talking about. The words wolf and guardian were heard as he shot his hand out to his ear to cover the tattoo but it was already too late. They saw it already and started to back away. My grandmother must have stood up to do the same as multiple people started to scream wolf. He looked at her and tried to grab her hand to reassure her everything was fine but it was of no use. Tears formed in her eyes as she ran away for dear life. He tried to chase his soulmate but people tried to stop him by standing in his way while some even tried to kill him. When he finally got to the border of the town, she was gone and there was no way he could leave to find her as he was bound to the forest just as the guardians before him. Feeling all alone, he decided to shift into the form of the wolf spirit the possessed. He kept running and running deeper into the enchanted forest until he came across a pack of real wolves. Wolves that had never been touched by the moon goddess or the humans. These animals were here to roam freely as they enjoyed the protection of the guardians. He felt broken and came to stop as he approached the wolves. He took a deep breath to calm his nerves before he headed straight for the pack. He knew that the villagers were to never stop looking for his human form. As he had nothing left to lose, he became part of their pack as a lower rank wolf. He did not want to break the dynasty of the pack apart by becoming alpha. Especially when there had to be a moment in life where he had to return to his guardian life to ensure the protection. Days went by and a week turned into a month until one day he smelled something familiar. Something sweet like a combination of freshly cut grass and honey. The only time he smelled that before was… His ears perked up as he growled the word mate to no one in particular. His paws began to make speed as he started to run to the edge of the forest where the source of the smell seemed to be. However, he also smelled something different. The smell of wet grass and wet dirt after a long and rainy day. He slowed down when he was near the edge, afraid to spook his one and only true mate. He had hoped his mate would return to him, so the moment he came near her, he was full of hope. When he came closer she put down a little basket within there a baby. That’s the weird smell he noticed earlier. He was full of joy to see his child only to be shocked to see his mate walk away. He wanted to run after her but couldn’t leave the baby there all by its self. The moment she disappeared over the hills, he took the basket in his maw and turned around back to his old house. He put the basket down in front of the door and sniffed the baby. In return, a tiny hand stretched out to grab his fur. He felt a bit better and licked the little one's head. Taking a step back he shifted back into his human/ guardian form. Not caring if anyone saw him at that moment. Opening the door he took the handle of the basket in his hand and brought it inside. He walked over to the couch where a knitted quilt was folded over the armrest. After stroking the soft material, he placed it over the little child in the basket which looked back at him with her big, green eyes. He let a small smile appear over his face when he saw the blue mark of the potential guardians. He was the one to raise the baby and he made a vow to do it the best he possibly could.
