Chapter 54: The Changed Lock
The sun dipped below the horizon, casting long shadows across Adeline's quiet street as Williams, Betty, and Tommy approached her house.
The trio's hearts were heavy with worry, but a glimmer of hope persisted. Betty pulled out the key she’s had with her back when she stayed with Adeline and stepped up to the door, eager to find some clue about her friend’s whereabouts.
She inserted the key into the lock and tried to turn it, but it wouldn't budge. Frowning, she tried again, with the same result. "This doesn't make sense," she said, her voice tinged with confusion. "The key isn’t working."
Williams moved closer, inspecting the lock. "It looks new. This isn't the lock Adeline had before."
Tommy ran a hand through his hair, frustration evident in his eyes.
