CHAPTER XIVThe Theory of “Cross and Re-Cross” I had to smile again, when I reached the end of the story. I didn’t know whether it was a masterpiece—or just another yarn. It did strike me, however, that putting the point of view of the dead man himself in the story—whilst he was still alive, that is!—and of his dreaming self, too—and tossing in also, as characters, not only the non-existent party he dreamed about, but those who had to investigate his “murder”—and last but not least dragging in the good Lord himself as prime villain, was as fair a shot at originality as anything could be.
