I didn’t know what to do. My heart pounded, each beat growing louder in my ears. I saw the woman’s eyes glance toward me, her brow furrowing as if she were trying to figure something out. I wanted to run, to flee from the confrontation, but my feet felt like they were glued to the floor.
I lowered my gaze, desperately trying to hold back the tears welling in my eyes.
“Z-Zein—” Dylan called me, but before he could finish, he was interrupted by Mama Heidy’s cheerful voice.
