Chapter 2

Instead she ignored the world around her as she placed her backpack on the floor beside her desk. She then grabbed her notebook out and a few pencils, preparing herself for class. The eyes that she could feel on her had finally looked away and she allowed herself to just pay attention to the contents of the folder Mrs. Richardson had handed her. From what her schedule showed, this would be College Algebra class with and then after that would be World Literature, following with Psychology, an Art Elective called Painting 1, Astronomy and finishing with Home Economics. Not a bad selection of classes that her mother chose for her, especially ending with a cooking class.                 Finally, after about seven minutes the second bell rang indicating classes to begin. Looking up she noticed the teacher, Mr. Michaels from what he wrote on the board, continue to write equations on the board ready to start going over the material. Well at least she didn’t have to introduce herself. That alone was a relief. Flipping her notebook open she started to take notes from the teacher’s discussion. Class went by smoothly with no problem and finally the bell rang indicating class was over. Closing her notebook, Lylah placed it back into her backpack along with her pencils and moved out of the desk chair. Grabbing her bag from the floor and the folder with her class schedule, she started to move to the classroom’s exit.                 “Excuse me, Miss Lylah Smith. Could I have a word with you before you leave.” Turning back around she moved over to the teacher’s desk while everyone else filed out of the room to head to their next classes. “I just wanted to hand you over the assignment sheet and the assignments that you will need to complete within the next few weeks to catch you up here. These are just the ones I feel are the most appropriate ones to complete for this class. Please let me know if you have any trouble. At the end of next week, I’ll check up on you to see if you might need help or a little more extra time. Does that seem good?”                 While he was talking she had looked down at the assignments for the week and then the next sheet that showed the assignments that she had to make up. There were just a few questions it seemed from the first few chapters. Not too hard to accomplish the make-up. When he was finished talking she looked up to him and nodded her head. “Yes, that sounds fair and thank you for giving me time to catch up.”                 “Good. Please feel free to come talk with me if you have any questions on the assignments.” With that he moved to go towards the board to start dry erasing the material he had covered. With that she turned back around and headed out the door. Opening her folder, she placed the College Algebra assignment sheet in there and took out her class schedule to find the World Literature class with Mrs. Meyers. Seemed the class would be on the second floor, so she moved to one of the corner stairwells to head to classroom 221. The school didn’t seem to hard to navigate as there were signs that helped point which way certain number classes existed.                 Finding the classroom, she entered in it seeing that the teacher was writing some information on the board to prepare for the class early. However, Lylah also realized that all the seats were pretty much full except one. Moving over to it she realized just where she sat. It was more to the left of the classroom facing the board, yet the boy she kept seeming to run into was also in this class sitting behind the seat. Trying not to stare at him, she looked just at the seat and placed her backpack on the floor again. Grabbing out a different notebook and a couple pencils she kept her eyes down cast. She couldn’t believe the reaction she was having to him and also, how it is they had already two classes with each other.                 “Nick, new girl seems to be following you around.” The words were whispered, but in that obvious not caring that she could hear or not. Instead of taking the bait she just stayed to herself. Still she did with she could use her magic on him. That would be entertaining to see how hot his chair could get before he jumped out of it. Oh well, she would just have to keep it in her thoughts instead. At least she knew the name of the guy she was destined to run into all day, Nick. That was a name that definitely fit him.                 “Just stop it Zac.” So, Zac was the one who was the one that wanted to start something with her. At least Nick seemed to be as nice as he had earlier. Though from these last few classes he had to be a jock or cool kid of the school. Not someone she should ever get herself tangled into. That would just cause further trouble. With any luck, maybe Zac would listen to Nick. Shockingly, that is exactly what happened as he just dropped the conversation.                 The bell rang, and the teacher started right into her lecture. Maybe her mom had ensured that no introductions were to be made, but she was thankful for not having to do them so far. It allowed her to just focus her attention to the lecture and take the notes. English was never really her favorite subjects, though Mrs. Meyers seemed to make the subject interesting as she explained the over what it seemed was Homers: The Odyssey. Thankfully she had read this at her last school so was able to keep up with her conversation.  If anything, she might need to read it again, but at least it was familiar.                 Class continued quickly and ended just like her math class. The teacher again pulled her aside to personally give her assignments and ensure she would catch up with the rest of the class. Her painting class was calming enough as there were no extra assignments for her to catch up on and for once Nick wasn’t in her class. That allowed her to relax some as no one really seemed to take much notice of her in this room. Then lunch finally came where she just grabbed some fries from the cafeteria and sat under a tree outside. Being outside was always much more relaxing, but with the bracelet on, it wasn’t as relaxing as it could be. With the bracelet she was unable to connect with the elements like her magic wanted, but it was something she just had to endure. Lunch didn’t last long and before she knew it the day was wrapping up. She only had one other class with Nick which was Astronomy, but thankfully had made it to class early enough to grab a seat as far away from him as she could. Since classes were now over she figured it might be best to stay at school later to work on her assignments. She knew that maybe she should go home but felt she would be fine being out a bit longer. She was a bit unbalanced, but not enough to worry about. Taking out her phone from her bag she texted her mom deciding to stay in the library and wanted to let her know. Hey, school went well today. I have a bit to catch up on and I’m just going to stay at the school’s library. I’ll make sure to be home around 6:30 at the latest. That should get me done with a some of it. Heading to the library, which happened to be on the third floor, she managed to find a small desk over at the corner of the room. That would be the perfect spot to listen to music and get some of her assignments out of the way. Once she sat down and placed her headphones in she heard the ping indicating a message was received. Looking down she saw her mom had message back. Sounds like a plan sweetie. Let me know if you’d like me to pick you up. I should be fine mom. It’s not that far of a walk. Thanks though. I’ll let you know when I’m heading home. :) see you then. See you then. Love you sweetie :) I love you too. Smiling at her mom’s messages she turned on an alarm for 6:20 so she wouldn’t worry about constantly checking on the time or lose track of it too much. She then turned on her study music playlist and pulled her notebooks out to get started with her College Algebra and then would work on her World Literature. She should be able to get a portion of each make up assignments done, and tomorrows homework done. Once she started working on some of the equations and problems she started to get into a flow. The time passed by quickly as the alarm on her phone pulsed through her earbuds. Shutting the alarm off, she closed her study playlist and placed her phone on the table while she placed her notebooks back into her backpack. Getting out of her seat, she picked up her backpack and then her phone as she headed out into the hallway to head to the stairs. While she did this, she messaged her mom a real fast. I’m heading home now. See you soon. Her response was quick. Wonderful. I’m home already. I’ll see you soon. Once she reached the stairs, she moved down to the first floor and entered the halls there. Moving down them she headed for the main entrance of the school and out the front doors.  Once she was outside she was thankful for wearing the sweater. There was a slight chill in the air as she walked home and while she was walking she felt the hairs on the back of her neck raise, but just as it came it disappeared. Rubbing the back of her neck she wondered if it could have been them, but that wouldn’t be possible. Maybe it was her magic getting overwhelmed again. She could feel the wear on her. It had to be just that. Walking the few blocks she needed, she got to her house and walked through the barrier that surrounded it. No one would notice except those of the supernatural. There was just a slight shift in the air where one would feel the change. Once through the barrier she moved up to the front door to enter the house. The door was always unlocked because no one could just walk through that barrier without being allowed in by her mom. Entering the house, she removed her shoes and placed them back on the rack. Looking into the kitchen, which was to the right, she saw her mom cooking up her favorite dish, baked goulash and was just putting it into the oven. “Awesome. I love baked goulash.”                 Her mom turned and smiled at her. “Of course, you do. It is your favorite meal.” That’s when she could tell there was more to this meal. Her mom always did this when she had to tell her something she might not be happy about.                 “You mind as well spill it. I know you are up to something.” Lylah moved to the kitchen table and sat down.                 Her mom then sat down in the chair across from her and smiled softly. “Well you know your father’s old friend is the Alpha in charge of this area and one of the reasons we came here. He and his son will be coming by shortly.” Oh yes, that was right. Her parents had explained that they would be the ones helping with their situation. “Oh, I think that’s them now. I’ll be right back. You just relax.” She watched as her mom walked to the front door and left outside onto the porch, closing the door behind her.
