The Invisible Hand
The realization lingered in the room long after the words had been spoken.
She hadn't worked alone.
Alessandro remained motionless, his eyes fixed on the enlarged surveillance image projected across the wall of his study.
The waiter.
Until moments ago, he had been nothing more than another face lost among hundreds of hotel staff.
Now...
He was the first thread in a tapestry someone had spent years weaving.
Enzo broke the silence.
"You really think he was with her?"
Alessandro didn't answer immediately.
He stepped closer to the screen, studying every detail with deliberate patience.
The waiter's posture.
The angle of the tray.
The direction of his gaze.
Most people looked at where they were walking.
The waiter hadn't.
He had been watching the woman.
Not openly.
Professionally.
The kind of observation that came from training rather than curiosity.
"He wasn't serving guests," Alessandro said quietly.
"He was serving her."
Enzo folded his arms.
"Backup."
Alessandro nodded.
"Or security."
"You think he was armed?"
"I think he was prepared."
The room fell silent again.
Enzo had spent nearly fifteen years protecting Alessandro. He had learned to trust instincts backed by evidence.
Alessandro possessed something rarer.
He noticed evidence everyone else overlooked.
"If she had backup inside the ballroom," Enzo said, "then someone helped her long before she arrived."
"Exactly."
Alessandro turned away from the display.
"This operation wasn't planned in days."
"It was built over months."
"Possibly years."
He walked slowly toward the floor-to-ceiling windows overlooking the De Luca estate.
Morning sunlight spilled across the vineyards below, peaceful enough to convince anyone that the world remained unchanged.
It hadn't.
Someone had breached one of the most secure events in Valenza.
Someone had entered, completed an objective, and escaped without leaving a name.
That alone was impressive.
Doing it with support hidden inside the event...
That was something else entirely.
Enzo walked to the table and opened another folder.
"I've already started reviewing every employee who worked at the gala."
"How many?"
"Three hundred and twelve."
"Catering."
"Security."
"Valet."
"Cleaning staff."
"Entertainment."
"Florists."
"Maintenance."
"Even the musicians."
Alessandro nodded once.
"Good."
Enzo looked up.
"You don't sound surprised."
"I would've done the same."
"You think she'll use them again?"
"No."
Alessandro's answer came immediately.
"Professionals never reuse compromised assets."
Enzo considered that.
"So we're already too late."
"We're late..."
Alessandro corrected calmly.
"...not defeated."
He walked back toward the surveillance screen.
"She planned every movement inside that hotel."
"That tells me something."
Enzo waited.
"She values preparation over improvisation."
"People like that don't disappear."
"They prepare somewhere."
"They train somewhere."
"They report to someone."
His eyes settled once more on the paused image of the woman in black.
"If she belongs to an organization..."
"...then organizations leave patterns."
Another knock interrupted the conversation.
This time, it was sharper.
More urgent.
"Enter."
The study door opened.
Lucia Ferraro, Director of Corporate Intelligence, stepped inside carrying a secure tablet.
"I believe we've found something."
Alessandro turned.
Lucia rarely interrupted unless she was certain the information mattered.
"What is it?"
She placed the tablet on the desk and activated the display.
A detailed blueprint of the Grand Bellagio Hotel appeared.
Every floor.
Every corridor.
Every restricted access point.
One section flashed red.
"The security office."
Alessandro studied it.
"What about it?"
Lucia enlarged the image.
"We've confirmed someone accessed the server during the gala."
Enzo sighed.
"We already knew that."
"Yes."
Lucia met his eyes.
"But now we know what they were looking for."
She pressed another command.
A classified directory appeared on the screen.
The title alone was enough to change the atmosphere inside the room.
PROJECT ARGUS
Neither Alessandro nor Enzo spoke.
Lucia broke the silence.
"Whatever this woman stole..."
"...it wasn't random."
"It was targeted."
Alessandro's expression hardened.
For the first time since the gala...
He realized the theft wasn't merely an attack on his organization.
Someone had been searching for a secret.
The only question now was...
Why?
