Echoes of the Past
The study remained silent.
No one reached for the tablet.
No one broke the silence.
The words PROJECT ARGUS seemed to linger in the air long after the screen had gone dark.
Alessandro rested both hands on the edge of the conference table, his eyes fixed on the blueprint of the Grand Bellagio Hotel.
He wasn't looking at the highlighted security office anymore.
He was looking beyond it.
Thinking beyond it.
"Who knew about Argus?" he finally asked.
Lucia Ferraro glanced down at the encrypted report in her hands.
"Officially?"
"Six people."
"And unofficially?"
Lucia hesitated.
"I can't answer that."
Alessandro looked at her.
"You can."
"I just won't like the answer."
Enzo shifted his weight against the table.
"Meaning?"
Lucia took a slow breath.
"Project Argus wasn't designed to be permanent."
She tapped the screen again.
A classified organizational chart appeared.
"It was created fifteen years ago as a joint intelligence initiative."
"Between whom?"
"The De Luca Foundation."
"Three private security contractors."
"And two government agencies."
Enzo frowned.
"I've never heard of it."
"You weren't supposed to."
Lucia enlarged another page.
"Argus collected intelligence."
"Financial movements."
"Arms trafficking."
"Political corruption."
"Organized crime."
"But it also gathered something else."
Alessandro studied her expression.
"What?"
Lucia swallowed.
"Names."
The room grew still.
"The real identities of undercover operatives."
"Confidential informants."
"Double agents."
"And people are placed inside criminal organizations."
Enzo's expression hardened.
"If those files were stolen..."
Lucia nodded gravely.
"Every person connected to Project Argus could be compromised."
Alessandro remained remarkably calm.
"How many?"
Lucia looked down.
"We're still counting."
The answer was enough.
Whatever the mysterious woman had taken...
It wasn't valuable because of money.
It was valuable because of people.
Far beneath the abandoned vineyard, Isabella stood alone in the operations center.
The room was almost empty.
Most analysts had ended their shifts before sunrise.
Only a handful remained, quietly reviewing encrypted files retrieved during the previous night's mission.
She stood before a panoramic window overlooking the underground command floor.
Agents moved efficiently between departments.
Large digital displays projected maps, surveillance feeds, and streams of coded intelligence.
Everything operated with military precision.
Yet something felt different.
Her thoughts refused to settle.
Alessandro De Luca.
She had expected arrogance.
Violence.
Ruthlessness.
Instead...
She found herself remembering a man who had watched rather than reacted.
Who had observed instead of panicked.
Who seemed more interested in understanding than controlling.
The thought irritated her.
She turned away from the glass.
A voice interrupted the silence.
"You're distracted."
Vincent Moretti stepped into the room carrying a thin leather folder.
"Not really"
"Your mind is somewhere else."
She met his gaze evenly.
"I'm thinking about Project Argus."
Vincent smiled faintly.
"A good answer."
He handed her the folder.
"Your next assignment."
Isabella accepted it.
"What is it?"
"Surveillance."
She frowned.
"That's all?"
"For now."
Vincent walked toward the illuminated city map mounted on the wall.
"Every hunter reaches a point where observation becomes more valuable than action."
He pressed a button.
A familiar face appeared on the screen.
Alessandro De Luca.
"For the next phase..."
Vincent said quietly,
"...I don't want you stealing from him."
He turned to face her.
"I want you to understand him."
Isabella looked from the screen back to Vincent.
"You want me to watch him."
"No."
His voice remained calm.
"I want you to learn how he thinks."
The room fell silent.
Outside, dawn finally broke over Valenza.
Unseen by either of them, Alessandro had issued the exact same order.
Not to capture the woman in black.
To understand her.
And somewhere between hunter and hunted...
The distance between them had begun to disappear.
