Chapter Four

875 Words
Beneath the Vineyard The iron gates closed behind the black sedan with a dull metallic groan. For a few moments, the only sound was the crunch of gravel beneath the tires as the vehicle followed the winding driveway toward the abandoned manor. Moonlight spilled over the neglected vineyard, revealing rows of withered vines stretching across the hillside. The stone mansion stood silently in the darkness, its cracked windows and weathered walls giving every appearance of a place forgotten by time. It was exactly what it was supposed to look like. The sedan came to a stop beneath a crumbling stone archway. Before the driver could step out, the front door of the manor opened. A tall man dressed in a black suit descended the steps. He carried himself with the posture of a soldier, his movements disciplined and deliberate. Without a word, he opened the rear door. "Welcome back, Miss Bell." Isabella stepped out of the car. "Is he awake?" The man allowed himself the faintest smile. "He refused to sleep." She wasn't surprised. He never slept when one of his operations was underway. The driver remained behind the wheel. "I'll have the car ready if you need it." She closed the door gently. "This meeting won't take long." The bodyguard led her through the front entrance. The interior matched the exterior. Dust covered antique furniture. Portraits hung crookedly on faded walls. A grandfather clock stood frozen at twelve, its pendulum forever motionless. It was an elaborate illusion. Anyone wandering inside would assume the estate had been abandoned years ago. Halfway down the corridor, Isabella stopped before an enormous oil painting of a vineyard at sunrise. She reached beneath the ornate frame and pressed a concealed switch. A quiet mechanical click echoed through the hallway. The painting slid aside, revealing a reinforced steel door. The bodyguard entered a security code. The door unlocked with a hiss. Behind it waited a private elevator. They stepped inside. As the doors closed, the elevator began its silent descent. Ten seconds. Twenty. Thirty. When the doors opened again, the abandoned mansion no longer existed. Bright white lighting illuminated a modern underground facility carved deep beneath the estate. Security cameras tracked every movement. Armed personnel monitored surveillance feeds from a glass-walled control room. Large digital displays covered an operations center where analysts worked quietly before glowing computer screens. No one spoke louder than necessary. Everyone had a purpose. Isabella walked through the facility without slowing down. People acknowledged her with respectful nods. She returned none. At the end of the corridor stood a pair of heavy walnut doors. The bodyguard stopped. "He's waiting." She nodded once. "I know." Without knocking, she opened the doors. A warm fire burned inside the spacious study. Floor-to-ceiling bookshelves lined the walls. Maps, historical paintings, and rare artifacts filled the room with understated elegance. An elderly man stood beside the fireplace, slowly pouring two glasses of whiskey. His silver hair was neatly combed. His tailored charcoal suit fit him perfectly. There was nothing about his appearance that suggested violence. That was precisely why he was so dangerous. He turned as Isabella entered. A gentle smile crossed his face. "Welcome home." She closed the door behind her. "You've been expecting me." "I've been counting the minutes." He handed her one of the glasses. She accepted it but didn't drink. "You taught me never to celebrate before the mission is complete." A flicker of approval appeared in his eyes. "I also taught you never to waste good whiskey." She smiled faintly. "You taught me many things." Vincent Moretti studied her for a long time. Then his attention shifted to the evening clutch resting beneath her arm. "Did you bring it?" Without a word, Isabella reached into the hidden compartment and removed the flash drive. She placed it on the desk between them. Vincent stared at it for several silent seconds before carefully picking it up. "So..." "The first door has finally opened." He walked toward a nearby computer and inserted the drive. The screen flickered to life. Encrypted folders filled the display. Financial records. Shipping manifests. Private communications. Security protocols. Vincent's expression remained unreadable as file after file appeared. Finally, he leaned back in his chair. "Excellent." He removed the flash drive and slipped it into his pocket. "You've exceeded my expectations." "I only completed my assignment." "Assignments reveal character." He looked at her thoughtfully. "Tell me about Alessandro De Luca." The question lingered between them. Isabella considered her answer carefully. "He notices everything." Vincent's eyebrow lifted. "Everything?" "He noticed me almost immediately." "Did he approach you?" "No." "What did he do?" "He watched." Vincent nodded slowly. "As I expected." She frowned. "You knew he would?" "I know Alessandro." His voice carried an unfamiliar certainty. "He doesn't chase mysteries." "He studies them." He walked back toward the fireplace. "If he noticed you..." "...he's already asking questions." The room fell quiet. For the first time that night, Isabella felt the true weight of what had begun. She had entered Alessandro De Luca's world under a false name. Now... He was looking for the woman who didn't belong. And somewhere across the city, a man known for uncovering hidden truths had just been given a mystery he couldn't ignore.
