Chapter One

The Woman Who Didn’t Belong Fifteen Years Later…… The Grand Bellagio Hotel glittered beneath a sea of crystal chandeliers. Politicians mingled with billionaires. Diplomats exchanged polite smiles while waiters moved through the ballroom carrying silver trays filled with champagne. Classical music drifted through the air, disguising the tension that lingered beneath every conversation. Every guest wore a mask. Not the kind made of silk and feathers. The kind built from secrets. Tonight’s charity gala was supposedly raising money for children's hospitals. In reality, it was where the most powerful people in Valenza quietly measured allies, identified enemies, and decided the future of the city. No one attended by accident. No one came without a purpose. Alessandro De Luca stood alone on the balcony overlooking the skyline. Dressed in a perfectly tailored black tuxedo, he looked every bit the successful businessman the public believed him to be. Only a handful of people knew the truth. Behind the respectable image was the man who controlled the most powerful criminal empire in Valenza. He watched the city in silence. “The guests are wondering if you’re ever going to make an appearance.” The familiar voice made him glance over his shoulder. Enzo Romano stepped onto the balcony with a relaxed smile. “The Ricci family has arrived,” Enzo said. “I know.” “The mayor is already asking for you.” “I know.” “The Minister of Justice brought twice as many security officers as last year.” “I noticed.” Enzo laughed softly. “You really do notice everything.” “It’s my job.” Before Enzo could answer, Alessandro’s attention shifted toward the ballroom. A woman had just entered. She wore a simple black evening gown that hugged her figure without demanding attention. Her dark hair rested neatly over one shoulder. She wasn’t trying to impress anyone. She wasn’t looking for photographers. She wasn’t searching for wealthy businessmen. Instead… She studied the room. Her eyes paused briefly on every exit. Every security camera. Every bodyguard. Every hallway. It was subtle enough that almost no one would notice. Almost. “Who is she?” Alessandro asked. Enzo followed his gaze. “The woman in black?” Alessandro nodded. “I’ve never seen her before.” Alessandro frowned. “Neither have I.” That answer immediately bothered Alessandro. Everyone attending tonight had been carefully vetted. Unknown guests weren’t supposed to exist. Especially not women who moved with the confidence of someone who already knew the building. Across the ballroom, Isabella Moretti accepted a glass of champagne from a passing waiter. She smiled politely. She never drank it. Instead, she continued walking through the crowd as though she belonged among them. Years of preparation had led to this moment. Her heartbeat remained steady. Control was everything. She could already feel someone’s eyes following her. Perfect. The first phase of her mission has been completed. She didn’t need Alessandro De Luca to trust her tonight. She only needed him to remember her. At exactly eight o’clock, the orchestra stopped playing. The master of ceremonies walked onto the stage. “Ladies and gentlemen, please welcome the chairman of the De Luca Foundation… Mr. Alessandro De Luca.” The ballroom erupted into applause. Alessandro stepped onto the stage and thanked everyone for supporting the foundation’s charitable work. He spoke with quiet confidence about hospitals, education, and opportunities for children across the country. The audience listened attentively. They saw a respected businessman. They applauded a generous philanthropist. No one saw the man who ruled Valenza from the shadows. As he finished his speech, his eyes searched the ballroom once again. The woman in black had disappeared. She wasn’t speaking with guests. She wasn’t on the dance floor. She was simply… Gone. His expression hardened. Without looking away from the crowd, he spoke quietly. “Enzo.” “Yes?” “Find her.” Enzo immediately disappeared into the sea of guests. Meanwhile… Far from the ballroom, Isabella slipped into a deserted service corridor. The music faded behind the heavy doors. She stopped outside a room marked AUTHORIZED PERSONNEL ONLY. Exactly where the building plans said it would be. She reached inside her evening clutch and removed a tiny flash drive. Inside the room, a security terminal glowed softly. She inserted the device. A loading bar appeared. 12%. She listened carefully. Silence. 34%. Footsteps echoed somewhere outside. 57%. Closer. 81%. Someone stopped directly outside the door. The handle slowly began to turn. Isabella held her breath. The door opened.
