FOUR In junior high, Datu and Kalila’s class participated in an outreach program—part of the school’s mission to instill compassion and inspire humanitarianism in their students. Their school had adopted Barangay Makopa, an underprivileged barangay near campus, and faculty-guided immersion activities were done monthly to help the residents in various ways. One time, their class was assigned at the local daycare, which, at the time, was more of a feeding center than a school. Volunteers would help feed the residents’ children and look after them while their parents were away at work. Over time, the number of children partaking the daycare’s services grew, and some kind of order needed to be put in place.
