When An Shu’s voice sounded beside her, Shen Zhi was briefly stunned. Then she looked up at him. The moment their eyes met, she said, “It’s fine. Actually, it hasn’t been that long.”
Hearing her response, An Shu didn’t show much reaction. He simply replied, “Mm.”
Shen Zhi gazed into An Shu’s deep, inky eyes. Her lips parted, just as she was about to speak—
“Captain!” Gu Yang suddenly called out loudly from behind.
An Shu turned his head to look, catching Gu Yang signaling him with a glance and a hand gesture. An Shu didn’t respond to him, but instead turned back to Shen Zhi and said, “You guys go ahead and eat.”
Shen Zhi’s expression flickered with a hint of disappointment. She replied softly, “Okay.”
Her assistant came out to join her for the meal. The two of them had grown closer in recent days and would usually chat casually during mealtime.
But today, Shen Zhi didn’t say a word. Even when the assistant tried to start a conversation, all she got in return were nods and the occasional “Mm.”
Fortunately, the assistant could take a hint. Seeing Shen Zhi’s fatigue and silence, she quietly returned to her seat and ate without pressing her any further.
Shen Zhi slowly picked at her food alone.
Just as she was about to finish eating, An Shu suddenly appeared with a tray and sat down directly across from her.
Shen Zhi looked at him and asked out a question, “Hm?”
Even seated, An Shu sat upright with a quiet grace, his posture exuding the refined air of a gentleman.
When he said nothing, Shen Zhi bit the end of her chopsticks and asked, “Why?”
“I ate late. I just happened to have something I wanted to talk to you about.”
Surprised, Shen Zhi blinked. “Oh? What is it?”
But An Shu didn’t answer directly. Instead, he said, “Let’s eat first.”
“…Alright.”
Shen Zhi had nearly finished, but to match his pace, she deliberately slowed down her eating.
She ended up picking her rice one grain at a time. Whether An Shu noticed or not, he didn’t comment—just ate quietly, as always.
Soon, An Shu finished his meal.
Shen Zhi had been watching and immediately put down her chopsticks as he did, then looked at him. “Okay, you can talk now.”
Sensing her impatience, An Shu replied—but not with what she was expecting. “Gu Yang called me earlier because he wants to apologize to you.”
Shen Zhi frowned slightly, confused.
An Shu continued, “So I came to find you. He wants to apologize properly.”
Shen Zhi felt a little let down. This wasn’t the kind of “matter” she’d hoped for. Casually, she replied, “Oh, I see.”
“Mm.”
Silence fell between them again.
After a moment, An Shu spoke, “I heard from Jiang He.”
“What did he say about me?”
“He said "you’ve been really diligent.”
At that, Shen Zhi’s lips curved into a smile. She laughed, “Oh, haha.”
Then a mischievous glint flashed in her eyes. She tilted her head and said, smiling brightly, “See? I told you I could do it.”
An Shu finally took a good look at her.
Today, Shen Zhi was dressed differently—casual in a hoodie, the unzipped front revealing a white inner shirt. Her light brown curls were tied up into a neat bun, exposing her pale neck and giving her an energetic, youthful charm.
Seeing her radiant smile, An Shu murmured softly, “Mm.”
“You did great. You kept your word.”
The praise made Shen Zhi’s smile grow even wider.
Then An Shu pulled out his phone and said, “Right—we should exchange contact info.”
He said it casually, as if completely forgetting that Shen Zhi had once deleted all of his contact details.
But Shen Zhi had genuinely forgotten.
So she didn’t think much of it. Picking up her phone, she said, “Okay.”
She unlocked her screen, opened her contacts, and handed the phone over. “Here—type your number in.”
An Shu took the phone and entered his number. He even saved the contact himself.
Shen Zhi thought that was it, but then An Shu opened WeChat and said, “Let’s add each other there too.”
It was only at that moment that Shen Zhi remembered—she hadn’t deleted An Shu.
She had blocked him.
Blocking wasn’t like deleting. With deletion, you could just re-add. But if you were blocked, even if the other person tried to add you, it wouldn’t go through—unless you unblocked them first.
Realizing this, her face flushed. She suddenly wanted to disappear on the spot.
Even though she was mortified inside, she kept her expression composed. She quickly withdrew her hand and muttered, “Wait a second.”
An Shu didn’t say anything—just watched her quietly.
It didn’t take long. Shen Zhi unblocked him, then pulled up her QR code and showed it to him.
An Shu scanned it in one smooth motion. Ding—friend request sent.
Then Shen Zhi received a message request: [S: This is An Shu.]
Staring at it, Shen Zhi hesitated, but in the end… she didn’t write to her ex-boyfriend in the notes field.
Meanwhile, An Shu had already labeled her as “Shen Zhi.”
Fine, Shen Zhi thought. Let’s just treat the past as the past.
An Shu didn’t react to her hesitation. After they added each other, he picked up his tray and stood up.
Looking down slightly at her, he asked casually, “Want to come with me?”
Shen Zhi also stood up. She didn’t follow him because she wanted to—it was simply because she had finished eating, and lingering would only make things awkward.
If she was going to treat that old relationship as over, then she needed to fully let it go.
She quietly followed behind An Shu. When they got to the sink area, they bumped into a familiar face.
Gu Yang had just finished his meal and was returning his tray. Seeing An Shu and Shen Zhi walking one after the other, he looked surprised. “Captain.”
An Shu didn’t show much expression. He stopped and nodded slightly. “Mm.”
Shen Zhi was just behind An Shu. When he stopped, she saw both Gu Yang and Jiang He.
This was her and Gu Yang’s first face-to-face encounter since the argument. Naturally, it felt a little awkward.
Shen Zhi looked around and stayed quiet. An Shu didn’t say anything either.
Just as she was about to speak, Gu Yang beat her to it. “Shen Zhi.”
She looked up at him. He had an odd expression on his face, and his skin—already dark—seemed to be flushing with effort.
Jiang He nudged him with an elbow, signaling him to stop hesitating.
Finally, Gu Yang stammered out, “Shen Zhi, I’m sorry about before.”
It had felt so hard to say those words before. But now that they were out, Gu Yang felt like a weight had been lifted.
He went on, now speaking more clearly, “I was biased against you. I judged you before I even knew you.”
He paused, not daring to meet her eyes. “That’s why I gave you a hard time. But Jiang He talked to me, and I realized I was wrong.”
“So… I wanted to offer you a sincere apology. I hope you can forgive me.”
Finally, he looked up at her, his expression serious and honest.
Shen Zhi was surprised. She hadn’t really taken the whole “Gu Yang wants to apologize” thing seriously. After all, everyone else had been talking about it—she hadn’t seen him take any action.
But now, hearing it from him directly, any lingering resentment vanished.
Her lips curved upward, her eyes crinkling into crescent moons. She smiled like a cherry blossom blooming in spring—bright, beautiful, and almost heartbreakingly warm.
“I accept your apology. "Let’s call it even,” she said. “I hope we can work well together from now on.” She shifted the tray into her left hand and extended her right toward him.
Gu Yang blushed—though it was hard to tell from his dark complexion. He reached out nervously to shake her hand, but before they could touch, An Shu—who had been quietly watching from the side—spoke:
“Let’s go put the trays away before the kitchen closes.”
Shen Zhi raised an eyebrow. There’s a closing time? “Oh.”
When she didn’t move, An Shu asked again, “Want me to carry it for you?”
That snapped her out of it. She pulled back her hand. “No need. I’ll come with you.”
With that, An Shu started walking calmly away. Shen Zhi followed.
As they walked, she turned her head and called back to Jiang He and Gu Yang, “See you later!”
Just then, An Shu suddenly picked up his pace, creating a wide gap between them.
