Chapter 13

Elara POV They were dark amber pools, hazy with drink and a desire so potent it stole the air from my lungs. He set the glass down on the windowsill with a soft thud. "Elara," he rasped, his voice rougher than usual. My heart hammered against my ribs, a frantic drumbeat in the sudden quiet. He took a step, then another, closing the distance between us until he was standing right before me. He was so large, a mountain of warmth and strength, and I had to crane my neck to look up at him. “I can’t,” he started, his voice cracking. He swallowed, his gaze dropping to my mouth before rising to meet my eyes again. “I can’t wait anymore.” The words, a raw confession torn from the depths of his soul, were the only permission I needed. In that moment, the world dissolved. There were no doubts, no fears, only him. Alpha. Mate. Ronan. Every hope I’d ever harbored, every secret dream I’d whispered to the moon, converged on the man standing before me. I knew, with a certainty that shook me to my core, that my expression held it all. Sapphire rose within me, not with aggression, but with pure, triumphant adoration. Mine. The single, possessive thought was a prayer and a promise. I was looking at my future, my forever, my everything. Our future, our forever, our everything, Sapphire said softly. A soft, shuddering whine escaped Ronan, although I didn’t know if it was him or Ranger. “That look,” he whispered, his voice thick with wonder. “Goddess, Elara.” He knelt before me, his large, calloused hands coming up to frame my face. His touch was electric, a brand of heat that seared through my skin and straight to my soul. He didn't kiss me again, not yet. He just looked at me, his gaze tracing every feature as if memorizing me for eternity. “You’re so beautiful,” he murmured, his thumb stroking my cheekbone. “Even in these… flowers.” A ghost of a smile touched his lips, a flash of the Ronan I knew, before the raw need took over again. He leaned in, and his mouth finally claimed mine. The kiss wasn’t gentle. It was desperate, hungry, and tasting of whiskey. It was his wolf, Ranger, staking his claim. I met them both, man and wolf, with equal fervor, my hands tangling in his thick, dark hair, pulling him closer. A soft moan escaped my throat, swallowed by his mouth. His hands slid from my face, down my neck, over the thin cotton of my pajama top. He fumbled with the buttons, his fingers clumsy with drink and haste. I helped him, my hands trembling as we worked them free. He pushed the fabric aside, his gaze falling to my bare skin, and he groaned, a low, guttural sound of pure possession that made Sapphire preen. He pushed me back gently onto the bed, following me down, his weight a comforting, intoxicating pressure. The world narrowed to the space between our bodies, to the slide of cotton against skin as he stripped away my pajamas, to the glorious, friction-filled glide of his bare chest against mine. Every touch was a discovery, every kiss a revelation. He mapped my body with his hands and mouth, learning the curve of my waist, the slope of my hip, the sensitive skin of my inner thigh. He worshipped me, and I felt not vulnerable, but powerful under his adoration. When he finally positioned himself between my legs, I was more than ready. I was aching, empty, waiting for the one person who could make me whole. He paused, propped up on his elbows, his face inches from mine. His eyes, though clouded with passion, were startlingly clear as he looked at me. “Elara,” he breathed, his voice breaking with the weight of his next words. “Are you sure? I can wait if you want to.” I nodded. “I love you, Elara.” Tears pricked my eyes, blurring his beautiful face. “I love you too, Ronan,” I choked out, my voice thick with my unshed tears. That was all he needed. He surged forward, and the feeling of him filling me was a cataclysm. It was pain and pleasure, a sense of rightness so profound it was like the world snapping into alignment. I cried out and arched into him. Our rhythm was primal, instinctive. It was the dance of mates, of two halves becoming one. The scent of him, of his arousal, filled the air, and Sapphire howled in triumph. This was more than a physical act; it was a sealing of the bond, a weaving of our souls on a plane beyond the physical. With every thrust, he branded me as his, and with every breath, I claimed him as mine. The pleasure built, a roaring tide pulling me under, higher and higher until I couldn't think, couldn't breathe. I could only feel. Ronan, Ronan, Ronan. His name was a chant in my soul. I felt his control snap, heard his guttural cry mix with my own, and the world shattered into a million points of brilliant, blinding light. We fell over the edge together, bound in the fall, our bodies slick and trembling as the aftershocks rolled through us. After, as we lay tangled in the sheets, his arm a heavy, possessive weight across my waist, his breathing was deep and even beside my ear, the faint scent of whiskey a sweet memory on his breath, everything felt right. Sapphire was curled up and purring contentedly in my soul, nestled against Ranger. Ronan was a little drunk, and I was in my flowered pajamas, but it didn't matter. It hadn't been perfect in a storybook sense. It had been real, and raw, and utterly, breathtakingly ours. It was the most beautiful night of my life. "I love you," I whispered into the darkness. His arms tightened around me where we lay tangled together in my narrow bed. "My beautiful Elara," he murmured sleepily. "So good to me. So perfect." I pressed my face against his chest, listening to the steady beat of his heart and feeling more complete than I ever had in my life. His breathing gradually evened out as the alcohol and exhaustion caught up with him, and soon he was sleeping peacefully beside me. I lay awake for a long time, memorizing the feel of his arms around me, the sound of his breathing, the way he murmured my name in his sleep. This was what I'd been waiting for all these years. This connection, this intimacy, this sense of finally being seen and wanted for who I was. This changes everything, Sapphire said contentedly in my mind. Now he knows. Now he understands that we can be together. "Everything's going to be different now," I whispered back, hope blooming in my chest like a flower after winter. I fell asleep with a smile on my face, dreaming of a future where Ronan looked at me with love instead of obligation, where we built a life based on choice rather than duty. I woke to cold sheets and an empty bed. Sunlight streamed through my windows, and I could hear the normal sounds of the pack house beginning their day. For a moment, I was disoriented, wondering if the night before had been a dream. But the rumpled sheets and the lingering scent of pine and leather told me it had been real. Ronan was gone. I sat up slowly, looking around my room for any sign of him. His clothes from the night before were gone, replaced by the memories of gentle hands and whispered endearments. But his scent was all over my sheets. Maybe he'd just gone back to his room to shower and change. Maybe he'd be waiting for me downstairs with that new look in his eyes, the one that said he finally saw me as more than an obligation. He will be different now, Sapphire said hopefully. Last night changed him, too.
