We were all a bit tipsy when we got to the senior prom, we stumbled out of the car giggling as we made our way to the party.
“I can’t believe the college guy you are dating the son of the one and only Miles Langley.” Claudia whispered to me.
I hadn’t come around to tell her that Leo had just been using me. I was trying to act like it didn’t happen but it did.
I chuckled, “it’s not him actually. Leo just had too much work and couldn’t make it.” I lied, “he is the guy I was tutoring.”
“Ladies.” Both boys said in unison as they offered us their hand.
Claudia and I looked at each other, we smiled then we put our arms around theirs as we walked into the party. Now that I was looking at this, I was beginning to realize how trashy it looked. It was a public school and they were trying to work with a small budget.
“Dulce you really outdid yourself.” Leon commented.
“No, it looks like trash.” I replied.
He snickered as he burst out laughing, “no offense but it does look like trash.” He stated, “what theme were you going for?” He asked.
I shrugged, “I didn’t even know there was a theme to be going for. It seemed like the committee just dumped all this on me and said ‘you figure it out.’”
Mr. Mendoza approached us, “Dulce, you were supposed to be here like an hour and half ago.” He said through his teeth.
“Why?” I asked.
He seemed to be taken back by the question. “Wh-what do you mean why? To help me with the decorations and finding out where other things are.”
“You realize that there was an entire committee made for this shitty prom night but for some reason you felt the need to call me to help you out?” I asked, “not the other five people who didn’t even bother to help out with any of this shitty, cheap and pathetic excuse of decoration we have going here?”
He opened and closed his mouth then just turned around and walked away. I guess he was so used to me being such a pushover that he didn’t think I could stand up for myself.
“Whoa, who are you and what have you done with Dulce.” Robby, Claudia’s date, said.
“Tell me about it.” Claudia chimed in.
“I guess tipsy Dulce knows how to stand up for herself.” Leon said.
I smiled, “and it felt great.” I said, “let’s spike the punch to get people to this level of happy, then you, “I turned to Leon, “you’re a spoiled rich kid who knows how to party, so you can DJ this party right?”
He looked at me with a serious expression, “I hate that you assume that I only know how to party.” He said, then he smirked, “I can run a party.” He said excitedly as he took his phone out as he walked to the DJ’s table.
I stopped him, “you need to be the one to spike the punch. Even if you’re caught nothing could happen to you since you don’t even go here.” I said.
“Where has this girl been hiding all this time?” Leon asked with a smirk as we headed to the table with the punch. I was to act as a distraction as he spiked the punch.
We proceeded to the DJ’s table, I grabbed the microphone, “I know this party seems kind of boring but how about we turn this up.” I said just as Leon connected his phone to the speakers and music came blasting out. Everyone seemed to be getting to their feet to dance, “everyone get yourself a cup of punch or two and let’s get to grooving it up.”
The party was beginning to seem a bit lively compared to when everyone was just seated around talking and on their phones. I walked up to Leon, “sorry that I’m making you work on prom night.” I whispered in his ear.
He looked at me, “are you kidding me? I have always wanted to be a DJ; I was thinking at a club or something but I guess this would do.” He replied chuckling.
“I’m going to get us some punch.” I said with a wink, “do you want one?” I asked.
“I would thank you.” He replied.
I was pouring Leon and myself a cup of punch when Emilia approached me. “Dulce, looking good tonight.” He said with a smile which was striking me as weird.
I leaned one arm on the table as I turned to look at her, “what do you want?” I asked as I narrowed my eyes at her.
She smiled, “nothing. I was just complimenting you on how great you look.” She gave me the most innocent look.
I chugged the drink in my cup as I bit back the urge to b***h slap her across the face. “I’m sure you’re the same girl that made fun of my makeup at the beginning of senior year, so now I look good in it?” I asked.
She turned around briefly eyeing Leon then she went back to my cup.
I snickered, “oh you’re buttering me up so you could ask me about him?” I pointed to Leon.
“No!” She blurted out defensively. “But he is kind of cute and I saw you two came in a limo. Who is he? He obviously doesn’t go to this school.”
I scoffed, “dream on.” I said as I grabbed the drink I had made for Leon and walked back to the stage.
It felt nice to have something, or in this case, someone Emilia wanted but couldn’t have. I wouldn’t put it past her to try something dramatic to get Leon’s attention, it was only a matter of when.
About an hour of music and dancing the principal, Mrs. Daniels, walked up to the stage, “if I could have your attention ladies and gentlemen. It is now time for us to announce prom king and queen.” She said.
She didn’t seem to care much about these kind of things, she just did it long enough for her to retire, which I’m assuming was soon due to her age.
“The prom queen is Emilia Denver.” She announced as people applauded and Emilia walked up to the stage. The principal put on her head a cheap silver crown, then she turned back to face the crowd of children, “and the prom king is Felix Emmons.”
I thought that by now everyone knew he was going to be prom king after all, his great-great-great grandfather was the one who built the school and Felix made sure to tell everyone that would listen, just that.
He walked up to the stage proudly as he waved around like he just won a freaking Oscar. He was given a cheap crown, then Emilia walked up to Leon, she smiled at him as she offered her hand out to him.
“Hi, I’m Emilia as you have probably heard. I was requesting if you could play us Thinking out loud by Ed Sheeran?” She asked.
I decided to step in, “oh Emilia that’s so romantic. Let me sing it for you. I don’t think he has the actual song.” I said as I looked at Leon and he seemed to have understood the assignment.
“That’s true. I have the beats though.” He said.
Emilia couldn’t afford Leon to know how much of a little mean girl she was so she smiled at me, “I just hope you don’t mess it up. I want my moment to be perfect.” She said as she walked back to Felix as they walked back to the dance floor.
“Thank you for going along. She is the bully I was telling you about.” I whispered to Leon.
He chuckled, “I got that. But the real question is can you sing?” He asked.
I rolled my eyes. “Just play the beats.”
Leon Langley
I woke up the next day with a pounding headache, I was half naked with a lady beside me but I wasn’t in my room. I looked around trying to figure out where I was when the door opened and Dulce walked in, if she was there who was this lying beside me?
“Good morning.” Dulce said as she grabbed a few things. She turned to look at me, “why do you look so surprised?” I asked.
I pointed to the girl beside me, “who is this?” I whispered.
Dulce laughed, “that’s Claudia. You started making out with her on our way home after you dropped off Robby. We were both too drunk to go back home so I brought you guys here, to my room while I slept in my mother’s room.”
I don’t know what hurt more, seeing how she spoke about it so casually or that she didn’t seem to mind that I might have hooked up with her friend.
“Relax. I don’t think anything happened anyway. You both were too drunk. That’s why I couldn’t let you go home looking like that.” She said as she walked out of the room.
I stepped out of the bed as I walked to the kitchen to get myself some pain killers or something. Dulce walked to the kitchen as she placed a bottle on top of the bed, “here is what you are looking for.” She said with a toothbrush in her mouth.
“Thank you.” I said as she waved it off walking back to what I assume was the bathroom.
I didn’t have a recollection of the events that led me to where I was right now. I do remember that I heard Dulce sing and she was amazing, I couldn’t get my eyes off of her. I don’t understand how I ended up making out with her friend. I sighed, she was the one I was hoping to make out with. I thought but I instantly brushed it off.
Moments later Dulce came walking out of the bathroom dressed in sweatpants and a tank top with her curly brown hair up in a bun. She looked at me and smiled, “how about I make us some breakfast. I think eating something should help with the hangover.”
Before I could say anything Claudia came running out of the bedroom and into the bathroom and she was throwing up. “Could you go and help her our please?” Dulce asked.
I would have rather spend time with her here but I didn’t want to seem inconsiderate so I want to the bathroom. “I feel sick.” Claudia said.
“Tends to happen after you drink a lot.” I said as I held her hair back. “Dulce how are you not throwing up too?!” I yelled.
Dulce chuckled. “Here,” she handed me a glass of water which I gave to Claudia who was now at the sink washing her face, “I didn’t drink as much as you guys did, I cut myself off when Claudia started almost stripping naked in the dancefloor. One of us had to be sober enough to get us back here safely.” She explained.
We were all seated at the table when Dulce served us some eggs and coffee. I took one bit of it and it was delicious. What can’t she do? I thought as I realized that I was falling in love with her.
