I didn’t know how I ended up at the beach but there I was, walking along the shoreline as I stared off into the night. I could hear music blast off into the distance when I realized that I had walked around that I had made my way to the same beach Leon brought me for that party.
I wanted to spend time with Leo, I wanted someone who wasn’t part of the small people I was used to. I needed an impartial person and clearly my mind wanted to spend time with Leo.
I saw the bonfire and people were seated around it. I slowly walked up to it when I heard a familiar voice.
“You should see this chick she is a senior in high school with a rocking bod.” He said as his friends chuckled.
“Since when do you mess around with high school chicks?” A friend asked.
“Since I found out they have rocking bodied like that.” He replied.
The lady that was on his lap chuckled, “maybe I should start messing around with high school guys too.” She said.
He kissed her, “you’re too old for that, but maybe some dude would like to hit that. We all have after all.”
The girl frowned.
“I guess high school boys have better morals. You should consider them.” I said as they all turned to look at me.
“s**t!” Leo cursed as he stood up almost dropping the girl on her lap into the fire.
I stood there and looked at him, “what did you…” he looked back and pulled me aside, “…hear?”
“Enough to understand why you asked for my number the day we met.” I replied as I wrap my hands around me.
“None of what I said there was true. The guys are jerks and I just entertain them.” He tried to explain.
“I honestly don’t even care. I’m just glad I knew what exactly goes in your head before I decided to make a major life decision based on your empty promises.” I stated then I just turned around and walked away.
The naïve part of me expected for him to run after me but obviously he didn’t but just went to his group of friends. I could hear them burst out laughing and I was barely holding back my tears. This night has been the worst night ever.
I was walking when I heard someone yell my name. I looked around confused, I didn’t know anyone around here and the one person I knew didn’t seem to care about my feelings in the slightest.
“Hey.” I felt someone touch my shoulder startling me. I almost fell back but he grabbed my hand and held me up. “I’m sorry I didn’t mean to scare you.” Leon said, “but I have been looking for you all over. We were worried about you.”
I pulled my hand back, “well you found me.” I stated as I turned around and walked away.
“Could you stop for a minute and just talk to me?” Leon asked me as he followed me.
“I don’t want to talk. That’s the whole point of wanting to be alone.” I replied.
“You do want to talk, just not to me. That’s why you came to see Leo.” He said.
I stopped and sighed as I ran a hand across my face, “I would rather not talk.”
“It’s fine. You don’t have to talk but at least let me drive you home. It’s very late and you shouldn’t be walking alone in these streets.” He said.
“Fine.” I agreed as he led me to his car.
We were quiet the whole ride home; this was the one day I was hoping my mother wasn’t home when I got there.
The car stopped, I thanked Leon and I leaped out of the car.
“Are you sure you don’t want me to come inside with you?” He asked as he also stepped out of the car.
I gave him a small smile, “I have been living alone for a while now. I’m sure I can manage one more night.” I said as I walked into the building.
My mother was seated there when I walked into the apartment. She came up to me, “I was so worried sweetie, where have you been?” She asked, concerned.
I rolled my eyes, now she was concerned.
“Out.” I replied nonchalantly.
“A young girl like you shouldn’t be out at this time of night.” She said.
“A young girl like me shouldn’t be living alone with no adult supervision. You didn’t mind doing that so how is this far from that.” I replied.
“Honey, could you please let me explain.” She pleaded.
I sighed, “I’m exhausted and I have school tomorrow. I just want to do to bed.”
“Okay then, you get some rest sweetie we’ll talk about it tomorrow.” She said as I walked to my room and locked myself in there. I got into my bed and I just let go of all the tears that I had been holding back.
I could feel a rush of feelings and pain bombarding me all at once and I felt like just yelling out loud but I just cried, letting all the pain I had been holding out.
Leon Langley
I hadn’t heard from Dulce in around four days. All the calls and texts directed at her were all going unanswered. I hadn’t seen Arabella here in days also, I asked my father and he told me Dulce wasn’t even talking to her own mother. She would spend the whole day in school and she would come back home and lock herself in her room.
I looked at my phone at the texts I had been sending Dulce, I texted her again. Come on please just talk to me.
She read it but ignored it.
I pocketed my phone when I saw Lucas walking up to me. “What’s up with you these days, you’re always looking at your phone.” He commented.
“Don’t worry about it.” I stated in an effort to get him to drop the matter. But it was Lucas, he never knew how to read the room.
“Come to think of it, I haven’t seen you in any parties or hooking up with some random chick.” He said.
I didn’t both responding.
“Oh, I never thought that I’d get to see the day.” He said as he burst out laughing, “you got ghosted by that Dulce chick, didn’t you?”
Technically, it wasn’t a lie. “I wasn’t ghosted. She just needs some time to get her s**t together.” I blurted out my reply coming off as defensive.
Lucas put a hand around me, “you know what you need? A guy night. I’ll invite the football team and we’ll get some beer and chicks. Tonight we help you get laid and you forget about this Dulce.”
I hated to admit it but I thought that was a great idea. I was stuck up and trying to help a girl who has been very clear that they don’t want my help. I just need to go out with friends, get drunk and get laid.
I smirked at Lucas, “you know what? Let’s do this.” I replied.
“There he is.” He said smiling as he put his arm around me, “there’s my best friend.”
The day moved on fairly quickly, a few lessons, football practice and Lucas and I went to his house with a few people from the team. Lucas already had beer at his place and we were just chilling in his garage.
Lucas handed me a beer, “who are you guys taking to the prom?” He asked.
I sighed, so much for forgetting about Dulce tonight.
The guys started naming their dates, “Marilyn asked me to the prom.” One guy said.
“Who the hell is that?” Lucas asked.
The guy laughed, “I didn’t know her name until she told me. I just knew her as fat ass, because she has this ass that I wouldn’t mind hitting, if you know what I mean.” We all cheers our beers.
“What about you Leon, who are you taking to the prom?” Lucas asked catching me off guard.
“Too much to choose from, I’m sure even fat ass Marilyn asked me but just got tired of waiting in line.” I joked deciding to play along.
It wasn’t necessarily a lie. A lot of ladies had asked me to the prom, I even had this notes slipped into my locker but the one person I wanted to go with was not even talking to me.
“But we all know that he will be going with Catalina.” One of the guys said.
We all laughed.
“You two have an effed up relationship but I’m sure Catalina would beat up any girl who tries to go with you.” Lucas said.
“Leave alone me, who are you taking to prom?” I asked him.
“I um… haven’t gotten a response yet.” He stuttered.
“Who did you ask maybe I could put in a good word for you?” I joked but I could tell by his expression he didn’t find that funny.
“Actually, I asked Catalina.” He blurted out.
Then everyone went quiet.
I didn’t mind him asking her, “that’s great. I didn’t know you wanted to go with her.” I said cheerfully. “Why hasn’t she said yes?” I asked.
“Because, like I said, she wants to go with you even though you’re stuck up on some other girl!” He barked.
I was taken back, “what are you mad at? You can go with Catalina if you want to I don’t care.”
“But she does. And if she goes with me it’s only because she wants to make you jealous.” He replied, “I’m sick of always playing second best for you.”
I was completely confused as to what was happening. I always thought we were close I didn’t know he harboured such kind of feelings. This was getting intense and the guys one by one started to leave till we were just Lucas and I.
“Why didn’t you tell me that you liked Catalina?” I asked.
“Because of the weird relationship the two of you have. I didn’t know whether or not you two were ever broken up and I didn’t want to have to mess with my best friend’s relationship. But now you seem to like someone else and she still doesn’t want me.” He confessed.
“First of all, I don’t like Dulce, I just care about her as…” I paused, I couldn’t think of a word, “it’s just complicated and secondly, Catalina and I broke up a long time ago, she just keeps hinting about us being together, probably for clout, but we aren’t.”
“I guess then she just isn’t the girl for me.” Lucas said.
“Maybe.” I replied, “besides there are a lot of girls out there that would want to go to prom with you. I’m sure if she sees that you aren’t stuck up on her she wouldn’t be playing hard to get anymore.”
“You think?” He asked.
I shrugged, “have you tried it?” I asked.
“Not yet. I guess it wouldn’t hurt if I tried it.” He agreed.
“That’s the spirit.” I said as I patted him on the back. “Now let’s go inside since your little outburst chased away our friends.” We laughed as we walked back into the house.
I was happy I was able to help my friend but now I was left conflicted about my feelings for Dulce.
