CHAPTER FIVE

Dulce Madden I was very self-conscious with the translucent piece of clothing I had on and it didn’t help that I felt like everyone was looking at me. “Is it just me or people are staring at me?” I asked Leon. He chuckled, “why wouldn’t they? I am looking at you.” “Why are you looking at me?” I asked, hoping his answer would help me understand what was going on. “I’m wondering why you dress like a guy when you have this amazing boy that you can show off.” He replied and before I could answer he pulled me aside into the crowd. I was confused, “how about we go get something to eat?” He asked. I scoffed, “I’m not going to a restaurant looking like this.” I gestured to what I was wearing, “I need a change of clothes or you can just drive me back home.” “It’s a restaurant that’s at the beach, everyone would be dressed like that or even with less pieces of clothing.” He said with a smile. “That’s them. I’m not used to showing this much skin.” I stated. I was getting uncomfortable with each passing second and it didn’t help that I could still feel eyes on me. He chuckled, “fine, let’s get you some clothes from Catalina’s wardrobe. She has a lot and I don’t think she will miss them.” He said as he dragged me into the house. The house was massive, with décor that seemed expensive. I was even afraid of touching, let alone stepping on the floor. Leon led me to a room that was upstairs, “this was her room the last time I was here.” He opened the door but it didn’t look like a girl’s room. Even my room wasn’t this masculine. Then a guy stepped out of the bathroom, shirtless, his abs showing, I could feel butterflies in my stomach. He smiled at us, “occupied.” He said. “I thought this was Catalina’s room.” Leon said but I was taking in how handsome this guy was. He chuckled, “you and I both. But I came back from college and found that she wanted my room because, according to her, it was bigger and Cat gets what she wants.” He said with a shrug. He pointed to me, “who is your cute friend?” He asked as he walked up to us. “Dulce.” I blurted out. “I see you moved on from my sister really fast, huh?” He asked, “I’m Leo.” “You’re so handsome.” I said, he chuckled and I covered my mouth. “I can’t believe I said that out loud.” Leo smiled, “it’s no problem. I don’t get to hear that at all.” “We should get out of your way.” Leon said as he pulled me aside. “It’s no problem. What did you guys need?” He asked. “Don’t worry we’ll…” Leon started. “I wanted a change of clothes. I didn’t want to walk around with just a bikini.” I stated cutting Leon short. “Let me guess, you thought you could get clothes from my sister’s room?” Leo asked. I nodded. “That’s not going to work. She is obsessed with her clothes and I think she knows all of them by heart by now.” He joked, “you could come in, I think I have some of my ex’s clothes in my closet. You could borrow them; I don’t think she’s going to need them.” He opened the door for us as he walked to his closet. “Dude, you still into all this science stuff?” Leon asked, he chuckled, “aren’t you a bit old to have these posters on the wall?” What I saw was this amazing science project, I walked up to it. “I tried this for my twelfth grade and I couldn’t get the molecules to come together like this, how did you do it?” I asked, curiously. Leo walked up to me, “I worked on that almost the whole night but I realized that I needed to use a substance with hydrogen. Because molecules of pure substances are attracted to themselves.” He explained. “Ooooh… That explains a lot.” I stated. We looked at each other and smiled. We must have been doing that for so long that Leon cleared his throat. We looked at him then back at each other, “here are the clothes,” he handed them to me, “there is the bathroom.” He pointed to it. I walked to the bathroom and I was very happy to see that the clothes were my size and style. Leon would eat his words when he sees that other people did prefer comfort too. I walked out of the bathroom with the t-shirt and denim jumpsuit. Leo smiled, “I’m glad they fit you.” I smiled sheepishly. “Well, thank you for your help but I think we should get going now.” Leon said as he made his way to the door. “Before you leave do you think I could get your number?” He asked. I looked at him surprised, “my number?” I asked. He giggled, “yes.” He said as he handed me his phone. This had never happened to me before. A cute guy asking for my number so, I wasn’t going to waste the opportunity. I promptly entered my number into his phone and handed it back to him. We said goodbye and when we got outside I got a wink face text from him. I was all smiles. I guess coming to this party wasn’t such a bad thing after all, I thought. I was walking behind Leon when I realized we were walking back to his car. “I thought we were going to the restaurant?” I asked. “I’m not in the mood to eat.” He said as he unlocked his car. I looked at him confused, “are you sure?” I asked. “Just get into the car.” He stated. He seemed to be in a bad mood but I wasn’t going to let that ruin my happiness. It wasn’t every day that I got a guy who had the same interests as me and was handsome, asking for my number. “I’m hungry though. Could you at least go to a drive through?” I asked. He sighed, “sure.” He replied. On our drive I was chatting with Leo, he told me that he told me he was in the University of California, he was a science major and he was around for a while and we could spend time together. I was so engrossed in the conversation I didn’t notice we were at the drive through until Leon tapped on my shoulder, “he asked what you wanted?” Leon said. I looked at him confused for a moment, “oh, oh, yeah, I’ll get the fries and a burger.” I said. I looked at Leon and apologized as I smiled sheepishly. “What are you doing on your phone that you can’t hear when I say something?” He asked. “I’m just talking to Leo.” I replied. “You guys seemed to have hit if off quickly.” He commented. “I know right?” I said excitedly. “It’s hard for me to actually connect with people my age but with him I don’t even have to try so hard. It’s like he gets me.” “He wasn’t as good as he looks right now back when he was in high school.” Leon said, “he got bullied a lot.” I smiled, “I guess that’s why we connect so well, because we understand each other and how hard it is like to be us.” I stated. We got our food and Leon dropped me off back at the apartment. I said goodbye to him and off he went. I think I should thank my mother for forcing me to leave the house. I had the best day of my life. Leon Langley I was expecting today to go differently. I didn’t think I would meet Leo Zimmerman and especially didn’t expect him to hit off with Dulce. I have been spending a lot of time with her and she didn’t seem as happy with me like he seemed to be when he saw Leo. What I didn’t understand was why I felt jealous anyway. I sighed, I opened the door to find my father and mother seated on the dining room table. “What is she doing here?” I asked angrily. “Son, that’s your mother. Show her some respect.” My father said. “How can you defend her after what she did to you?” I asked. My father sighed, “your mother and I decided to settle the divorce out of court so we wanted to agree on visitation rights for you. I thought that it would be best if you had a say in this.” He explained as he offered me a seat. “Sweetie, I was thinking…” my mother went to place a hand on me but I moved it away, she seemed hurt by this but she continued to speak, “I was thinking that you could come and spend time with me and Hugo, at least every weekend.” “You decided to move in with the man you had an affair with before even the divorce is finalized?” I asked. “Leon, your mother and Hugo seemed to be in love and now that I have met Arabella, I feel like I understand that we were both unhappy in this marriage. I’m sorry we put you through all that.” My father explained. “Who the hell is Arabella?!” My mother asked furiously. We both looked at her, “You thought dad wouldn’t start seeing anyone else when you cheated and left?” I asked. “Whatever you want. I’m soon turning eighteen and joining college, I wouldn’t have to see you if I don’t want to.” I said as I got up and walked to my room. I was starting to wonder whether my rebellious and polygamous nature was something I had gotten from my mother. She clearly was jealous that my father had gotten someone else when she didn’t seem the least considerate when she was the one who cheated.
