Dulce Madden
My mother had been on the phone most of the time of late, she was giggling like a teenage girl. I would sometimes feel a tad bit jealous of her, she was living her best life and yet here I was struggling with my studies with no boyfriend.
“Okay then. I’ll see you here tomorrow.” She said as she walked into the kitchen. “Good night to you too, handsome.” She said as she blushed.
“Wow, this is getting serious, very fast,” I commented.
She smiled, “I know but we are both in our thirties and we have children who are in high school, so we feel like we don’t have time to waste.” She said as she took a seat next to me.
“I’m happy for you. You seem to really like this guy,” I commented, “which is great for me since he would be more inclined to do you favours.”
“Oh yeah about that, I talked to Miles and suggested that maybe you should be the one to tutor his son.” My mother said.
“I don’t have time for that. Between working at the fast food shop, my homework and volunteering, I barely have time to myself.” I complained.
“And that’s why I suggested you for the job. His son is in a rebellious stage and you are tightly wound. You two would make for the perfect study partners.” She said, she was trying to convince me.
“Study partners? More like I would be studying for both of us,” I scoffed.
She walked up to me, on the positive side, you wouldn’t have to work because he will be willing to pay you for tutoring him.” She said excitedly, “so you can quit your job at the fast food diner.”
“How much money are we talking about here?” I asked.
“A hundred dollars a day,” she said with a smirk.
That was a lot of money for doing something I would be doing at home alone and I could save up enough to get myself a car or something. I needed to stop driving around with people and start driving myself around.
I sighed, “I would be willing to negotiate with Mr. Langley.” I said with a smirk.
“Oh my God, what is going on in that mind of yours?” My mother asked.
I smiled, “nothing.” I said with a shrug as I closed my books, “I will start preparing supper for the both of us.”
We had our supper as we spoke with my mother, who wouldn’t stop talking about Miles. About how he is such a gentleman and would do all the right things for her. I was close to my mother, she treated me like a sister rather than a daughter and I even thought that was too much information. But I would smile when she seemed all starry-eyed as she talked about him. She seemed to have put her life on hold to raise and provide for me. I was happy she was finally putting herself out there.
The day at school seemed to drag out but something happened that ruined my entire plan that I had in school.
I had maintained this persona of not being noticed in school. As a matter of fact, most of the ‘popular’ kids in your school didn’t even know that I went to Emmons High School. I was so distracted today that I happened to take a photo of one of the popular girls in school which put me on their radar.
“Um… could you move your ugly ass out of the way you are in my shot.” She scoffed as she shooed me away.
I quietly grabbed my food and as I was walking away I tripped and my strawberry drink spilled over the girl’s expensive shoe. It wasn’t even a large amount, just a drop. They burst out laughing when I fell and barely noticed the drop, but when she did, she went berserk.
She grabbed me by my hair and pulled me to my feet, “do you have any idea how much these shoes cost?” She asked through her teeth.
I could have easily defended myself if I wanted to, but I wanted this to end quickly so I could get on with my day.
“I will clean them up if you want me to.” I offered in a soft voice.
She smirked, “ Yes you will.” She said as she pushed me back down to the floor. “Wipe it off with your shirt.” She said as she snapped her fingers to her friend, who took out her phone to record it.
This was no longer a situation I would control, especially if the video ended up on social media. I was already gathering a few students, so I thought I might as well just defend myself.
I sighed, “no, I would not do that.” I said as I stood back on my feet, “bullying is so overrated in this day and age.” I said as I rolled my eyes.
She was taken back by this as she seemed to have been used to getting her way. “Do you know who I am?” She asked in a low threatening voice.
“I honestly don’t.” I said as I crossed my arms.
“Well, you are about to,” she said with a smirk as she walked away.
I sighed, great now I don’t have anything to eat, I thought.
I started collecting the food that was on the floor when I felt a light tap on my shoulder. I looked back and it was this girl with braces. She smiled awkwardly at me, “ You could share my lunch.” She offered.
I could tell she was shy and it took a lot for her to walk up to me. I smiled back at her, “what do you have?” I asked as I threw the food in the trash.
She seemed excited that I had asked her that, she started listing what she had.
“How about just the apple?” I asked.
She handed it to me and we sat together for lunch. She and I had a lot to talk about and I could already tell we were going to make good friends.
I was glad when the day ended and I could actually go back home. We drove with my mother, who I didn’t tell about the incident at school. We reached our apartment and Miles was already there.
My mother walked up to her and she hugged him. “Miles, this is my daughter Dulce.” She introduced me to him.
I tried to speak but no words could come out of my mouth, I just stuttered like a fool.
My mother chuckled, “she is just a huge admirer of your work.” She explained. “Dulce, didn’t you have something you wanted to speak to Miles about?”
“Yes. I was wondering if you could get me shortlisted for a scholarship at your foundation.” I stated, surprised that I was even able to utter those words.
Miles chuckled, “that is not going to be a problem. But it requires that we speak extensively, so how about we meet in my office and we could discuss it further.” He handed me his card and I couldn’t believe it.
Suddenly, the dreams that seemed so far away were so close.
A guy stepped out of the vehicle, “can we go now?” He asked.
“Oh yeah, I thought that I would drive him here and you could study here. That’s part of his punishment.” Miles said. “This is my son, Leon.”
The guy was so handsome, he looked nothing like his father, but with a strong jawline and amazing jet black hair, he was like he had stepped right out of a magazine.
“I’ll be meeting my tutor here?” He asked as his face cringed.
It was as if his expression was a slap on my face that snapped me out of the trance I was in. He was a handsome, entitled guy.
“You just met her,” Miles said as he pointed to me.
Leon looked at me as if criticizing me. I rolled my eyes, “once you’re done you can come up. I will have my books ready because I doubt you brought any.” I said, “it’s door number seven, you can count, right?” I asked.
Miles smirked, “I love her already.” He said. He then turned to Arabella, “ Let’s go. We don’t want to be late.”
I waved good bye to my mother and walked to our apartment building, leaving Leon standing out there. I wasn’t working today, so it would give me a sense of who I am dealing with and what I was about to get myself into. This was going to be a long afternoon.
