Candace sighed sadly while walking out of the building. She just had an audition for a small role in a movie, and she thought she had done her best to show what she could do as an actress. She thought she had performed well, but the casting director told her that although she did good at showing her skills as a performer, he was sorry, but she was just not what they were looking for. She called her agent, and they talked about what happened at the audition. Then they said goodbye and Candace went inside Taffy's Diner, a diner that she usually eats during lunch, since it's cheap, and she had been saving up money. She took a seat in one of the chairs and when a waitress arrived to take her order she ordered her usual burger and fries and waited for her order after the waitress had left.
While waiting for the food, Candace is left in her thoughts. She couldn't believe how her life turned out. When she was a little girl she had hopes and dreams about what the future was going to be like for her. When she was little she always thought that the road to becoming famous was going to be easy. She never thought that when she grew up she would be a struggling actress who had been to like a hundred auditions in 6 years and had only acted in small parts in commercials and TV shows. Roles that did not help her much in becoming a star. Candace was pulled away from her thoughts when the waitress came back with her order. She thanked the waitress and, when she left, ate her food in silence.
"So, what happened at the audition?" Her roommate Melanie asked when she got back to their small apartment.
"Hello to you too, Melanie. How was your day?" Candace responded, trying to change the subject.
"Fine, now did you get the part or not?" Candace sighed.
"No, I didn't get the part." Melanie gave her a sympathetic look.
"I'm sure there are other auditions out there. Maybe your big break is going to be at your next audition. Cheer up. Do you want me to make you a Mac and Cheese?" Melanie offered since Candace seemed to love the Mac and Cheese that she had made before.
"I just ate at Taffy's Diner. I'm just going to go to my room and take a rest." Melanie nodded. She went back to watching TV while Candace headed to her room. She changed her clothes and then lay down on her bed.
A week later, Candace and Melanie were working at Annie's ice cream shop. They were just taking a break since there seemed to be not that many customers today when Candace got a call. It's from her agent. She hurriedly picked up the phone, a little nervous about what the phone call was going to be about.
"Hey, Maya! What's going on?" Candace greeted her.
"Candace, I have great news. I got you an audition and guess what, it's a TV show." Candace got excited hearing that. Another chance for her to show her acting skills. She promises herself that she is going to do her best. They went into details about the audition process, and she found out that the audition was going to be held in three weeks. She ended the call with a big smile on her face.
"So, what was the phone call about? You seem very happy right now." Candace squealed and told her friend about the news. When she was done, she told Melanie about it. They both squealed.
"Now this calls for a celebration. How about we go to that new burger joint downtown? My treat." Candace thinks it would be nice to go out with Melanie again. They haven't really hung out outside their apartment in such a long time, so it would be a good idea to have fun with her friend outside work and in their apartment.
When their shift ended, they went inside Shelly's, which is a new burger place. They chose to sit at the table near the window and were just chatting after they had ordered their food when Candace heard the radio at Shelly's playing a song called 'The Last Time'. But it's not just any song, but one of the famous songs by her childhood friend, Amanda Miller. She suddenly feels nostalgic just listening to the song.
Candace and Amanda became friends when Candace's family moved to Philadelphia and ended up living next to Amanda's family. Both girls bonded because both love the same music and movies and both made a pact to be famous together, but a year later they have that pact. Amanda's father was relocated for his job, so Amanda and her family needed to move. They promised to keep in touch, but their connection got lesser and lesser until one day Candace saw Amanda competing in the third season of a popular TV show 'Stars Tonight', and by the end of the season, awarded Amanda as the winner. Now Amanda is a famous singer-songwriter with many successful songs and tons of awards and accolades. Candace sometimes wondered if Amanda still remembered her.
'I doubt it' Candace thought bitterly.
Candace decided not to bother thinking about it and chatted with Melanie until their order was served. Dwelling about the past will get her nowhere.
