9 PAIN WON’T KILL On the way back to Jo’s my mind teems with everything bothering me. At a stoplight, I glance in the rear-view mirror expecting to see Dex and Nicolet, but there’s a white pick-up truck between us. The driver actually gives me a snarky wave and I look away quickly, embarrassed to be caught looking. Making our way through town, Dex and Nicolet try a couple of times to get around the truck, and I speed up to create a gap, but he stays so close on my bumper it’s starting to make me nervous. I sneak glances at him, and each time he’s laughing. I swear it’s at me. Unnerved, I jump when the previously silent speakers start blaring a ringing sound. I search the dashboard, bewildered.
