CHAPTER TWO: EMBRACE OF SHADOWS

1141 Words
The silence after Darius slammed into the stone wall echoed in the temple, followed only by his groan of pain. He wasn’t dead. Not yet. But the blow had shattered something in him, something deeper than just his bones. Selene’s heart lurched as she watched him struggle to stand, his face twisted in pain and confusion. Ezrael’s molten eyes never left Selene’s as he approached her, the power of his presence still overwhelming. The shadows twisted and writhed around him, flickering like fire but cold as death. His hand, warm and impossibly gentle, brushed her cheek, the gesture so at odds with the violence he had just unleashed. “You were never meant for him, Selene,” Ezrael murmured, his voice dark and smooth as silk. “He may think he can protect you, but even now, you see the truth, don’t you? He’s weak. He cannot keep you from me.” Behind them, Darius pushed himself to his knees, clutching his side where Ezrael had struck him. “Selene... don’t listen to him!” His voice was strained, but it still carried that familiar edge of desperation—the same desperation that had led him to offer her to the demon in the first place. Selene’s breath hitched in her throat as she looked between them—Darius, the man she had once loved, broken and bleeding on the cold temple floor, and Ezrael, the demon who had claimed her soul but touched her with an unsettling tenderness. “Darius,” she whispered, taking a step toward him, but Ezrael’s hand slid down her arm, his grip gentle but firm, holding her in place. “You know what he is now,” Ezrael said softly, his voice almost coaxing. “He was willing to sacrifice you. Over and over again. And for what? To save himself?” “No...” Selene’s voice faltered. “He did it for the village... for all of us.” Ezrael’s laugh was low and cruel. “The village? Look at him, Selene. He offered you to me not out of love or protection. It was out of fear. Fear of what I would do to them if you refused. And now... even he knows he cannot save you from me.” Darius’s eyes met hers, and for a moment, Selene saw something flicker in them—something dark. He didn’t deny Ezrael’s words. He couldn’t. Because deep down, they both knew it was true. He had made a choice, and that choice had been to sacrifice her. “You have to trust me, Selene,” Darius gasped, struggling to stand. “We can stop him... together. You don’t belong to him.” Ezrael’s grip on her arm tightened, but his voice remained soft as he whispered into her ear. “He’ll say anything now, Selene. Anything to keep you from seeing what he truly is.” Selene’s heart raced, the conflicting emotions tearing her apart. Darius, the man she had once loved, had indeed sacrificed her—again and again. And Ezrael... Ezrael had always been there, watching from the shadows, waiting for her to see the truth. “I... I don’t know what to believe anymore,” Selene whispered, her voice barely audible. Ezrael’s eyes softened, his molten gaze locking onto hers with an intensity that stole her breath. “Believe in yourself, Selene. Believe in the power inside you. You were never meant to be their martyr.” Darius staggered forward, his hand outstretched. “Selene, please. Don’t listen to him. We can still—” Ezrael moved faster than she could react, his arm shooting out to block Darius’s path. But instead of delivering another blow, Ezrael smirked, his eyes flickering with amusement as he let Darius inch closer. “Go ahead,” Ezrael taunted. “Take her back. If she still wants to be yours.” Darius’s gaze flickered between Ezrael and Selene, his breath coming in ragged gasps. “Selene... please.” Selene swallowed hard, her throat dry. She could feel the power Ezrael spoke of, humming beneath her skin, thrumming in her veins like a long-forgotten song. It had always been there, just out of reach. But it wasn’t the demon who had unlocked it. It was her. It was always her. And Darius... Darius had tried to bury it. Ezrael leaned closer to her, his lips brushing her ear as he whispered, “The choice is yours, Selene. But know this—no matter what you choose, you belong to me.” Selene’s heart pounded, her mind spinning with confusion, anger, and something else—something darker, deeper. She looked at Darius, the man who had once been her hero, her protector. And now, she saw him for what he truly was. Weak. Afraid. “I’m sorry, Darius,” she whispered, her voice trembling. “But I can’t keep sacrificing myself for you. Not anymore.” Darius’s face twisted in disbelief, his hand still outstretched toward her. “Selene, no—” Ezrael’s hand moved to rest on her shoulder, his presence grounding her as she stepped back, away from Darius. “It’s time to embrace who you are, Selene,” the demon murmured, his voice soothing, almost kind. For the first time in years, Selene felt something stir within her—something powerful, something unstoppable. She had been afraid for so long, but now, standing beside Ezrael, she wasn’t afraid anymore. Darius’s hand fell to his side, his face a mask of pain and betrayal. “This isn’t over,” he said, his voice cold. “I won’t let him have you.” Ezrael chuckled, the sound dark and full of promise. “You can try, boy. But you’ll fail. And when you do, you’ll see just how small and insignificant you really are.” Darius staggered backward, his face pale as he met Selene’s gaze one last time. And in that moment, she saw it—the darkness that had taken root in him. The darkness that would one day consume him. Without another word, Darius turned and limped away, disappearing into the shadows of the temple. Ezrael’s hand slid down to intertwine with hers, his touch warm and reassuring. “You made the right choice,” he whispered. Selene took a deep breath, the weight of her decision settling over her like a heavy cloak. She had chosen to walk away from Darius, from the man she had once loved. But in doing so, she had chosen something else—something darker, something powerful. “I hope so,” she whispered, her voice barely audible. Ezrael’s eyes gleamed with satisfaction as he pulled her closer, his lips brushing her forehead in a rare display of affection. “You are mine now, Selene,” he murmured. “And together, we will reshape this world.”
