Sixteen: “I don’t recall these feckers being so determined!” Alice exclaimed in amusement over the sounds of battle. Mashing mandibles and clattering carapaces resounded around her. Ice and arctic air blasted all comers. The focus seemed split between picking at our weakest link—Anne—and keeping me submerged in battle. My greatest concern—besides the safety of my two girls—was I might be forced to open my veins. After only a single month returned and with no opportunity to study this new affinity, even with the threats whirling and lashing around me, my focus was on the long game.
