Traditions and Teamwork

One of our favorite places to be as a couple is sitting in the stands at Point Stadium. There is something electric about the air there, right where the rivers meet in the heart of downtown Johnstown. As Mrs. Martinez, I’ve traded the skyscrapers of New York for the floodlights of this historic stadium, and I wouldn't have it any other way. A Shared Passion Antonio and I don't just go for the game; we go for the connection. We are big fans of the AAABA Tournament, and sitting there under the open sky, cheering for our favorite players, feels like a celebration of our new life. Being in love with a man who loves sports as much as I do makes every play more exciting. We wear our team colors with pride, leaning into each other as the crowd roars. Because of his Cerebral Palsy, we appreciate the accessibility of the stadium, allowing us to enjoy the outdoors without limits. Whether it’s a high school football game or a summer baseball matchup, the Point is where we develop more and more as a team.Home Field Advantage When the sun sets behind the grandstands and the stadium lights kick in, I look over at Antonio and see the same spark in his eyes that I felt the first time we talked. In New York, I felt like I was always playing defense, just trying to survive the day. But here, with the Martinez family by my side and the cheers of the crowd around us, I feel like I’m finally winning. The Point isn't just a stadium to us; it's a landmark of our freedom. It’s where we shout, where we laugh, and where we prove that life after pain is full of home runs. As the holiday season rolls into Johnstown, our home transforms into a hub of warmth and celebration. Transitioning from the fast-paced, often lonely holidays in New York to the community-centered spirit of Pennsylvania has been one of the greatest gifts of my life. For me, these moments are the ultimate "win." A Holiday for the Boys The holidays are truly centered around our "angels." My son, Vincent, and my nephew, Luis, have found a sense of stability and joy here that we never thought possible. Even though Vincent is twenty-five, the bond he shares with Antonio is something I cherish every day. Watching them talk sports or plan our next outing to the Point Stadium is a constant reminder that family is built on love, not just blood. Antonio has stepped into their lives not just as my husband, but as a mentor and a teammate. Whether we are heading to the War Memorial for a Johnstown Tomahawks game or preparing a big Catholic feast, we do it as a unit. We’ve developed a tradition of attending local community events, where the boys get to see the strength of a family that supports one another. Growing More and More Being in love with a man who embraces my family as his own has allowed me to blossom. As Mrs. Martinez, I finally have the space to breathe and the support to keep learning. My education—from my High School Diploma to my certifications as a Hospice Aide and Physical Therapy Aide—is something I share with them. I want Vincent and Luis to see that no matter how hard life gets, you never stop "continuing your education." We are constantly developing new ways to enjoy the outdoors and our favorite teams. Our life isn't just about surviving the day anymore; it’s about cheering for each other, on and off the field. From the snowy winters at the arena to the summer nights at the Point, the Martinez family is proof that after the pain, there is a beautiful, loud, and loving life waiting to be lived.
