Chapter 5 – The Storm Begins
Emily woke to the sound of her phone buzzing. It was still dark outside, the faint glow of the streetlights filtering through the thin curtains. She groaned, reaching blindly toward the nightstand until her fingers found the phone.
Her heart sank when she saw the caller ID.
Daniel.
Her thumb hovered over the screen before she finally answered.
“What do you want?” Emily’s voice was low and sharp.
Daniel’s smooth, controlled voice slid through the phone. “You’ve been busy.”
Emily’s fingers tightened around the phone. “Daniel—”
“I warned you,” Daniel said softly. “Careful who you let into your life.”
Her pulse quickened. “Leave Alex out of this.”
Daniel’s laugh was cold. “I don’t think so. I’m not the one who invited him into your apartment.”
Emily sat up sharply, her heart hammering. “What do you want?”
“I want you to reconsider the custody agreement,” Daniel said. “I’m sure the judge would find it very interesting to hear about the teenage boy you’ve been entertaining after school hours.”
Emily’s hands shook. “You don’t have proof of anything.”
“Don’t I?” Daniel’s voice darkened. “Be smart, Emily. Give me what I want, and this whole thing disappears.”
“And if I don’t?”
“Then you’ll lose Lily.”
Emily’s breath caught painfully. “You wouldn’t do that to her.”
“I’m not doing anything to her,” Daniel said smoothly. “This is about you.”
“You’re disgusting,” Emily hissed.
Daniel’s voice sharpened. “Make the right decision, Emily. For Lily’s sake.”
The line went dead.
Emily’s chest heaved as she dropped the phone on the nightstand. Her hands were trembling.
A knock at the door made her flinch.
“Emily?”
Her heart twisted painfully at the sound of Alex’s voice. She wrapped her arms around herself. “Go home, Alex.”
Alex opened the door anyway, stepping inside. His hair was damp from the rain, and he was wearing a dark jacket over a white T-shirt.
Emily’s face crumpled as he approached. “He’s going to take her.”
Alex’s gaze sharpened. “What did he say?”
Emily pressed her hand to her mouth. “He’s threatening to tell the court about us. About you.”
Alex’s jaw flexed. “He doesn’t have proof.”
Emily shook her head. “He has pictures. He’s been following me. Watching me.”
Alex’s eyes darkened. He stepped forward, his hands closing over her arms. “Emily—”
“You don’t understand,” Emily whispered. “Daniel always gets what he wants. He knows how to play the system. He’ll make me look unfit. He’ll take Lily—”
Alex’s hand slid behind her neck, his touch firm. “He won’t.”
Emily’s eyes filled with tears. “You can’t fix this.”
Alex’s gaze hardened. “Watch me.”
Emily’s breath hitched. “Alex—”
“I know people,” Alex said, his voice low and controlled. “My family has enough influence to make Daniel’s life very difficult.”
Emily shook her head. “No. I don’t want you involved in this.”
Alex’s eyes flashed with quiet fury. “I’m already involved.”
Emily swallowed hard, her hands curling against his chest. “You don’t understand how dangerous this could get.”
Alex’s expression softened. “And you don’t understand how far I’m willing to go for you.”
Emily’s heart slammed painfully against her ribs.
Alex’s thumb brushed her cheek. “I’m not letting him take her from you.”
Emily’s chest constricted painfully.
“You can’t promise that,” she whispered.
Alex’s mouth curved faintly. “You don’t know me as well as you think.”
Emily’s breath shook. “Alex—”
Alex leaned down slowly, his forehead resting against hers.
“I’ll protect you,” Alex whispered. “And I’ll protect Lily.”
Emily’s hands curled into the front of his jacket. Her heart ached with the intensity of it — how much she wanted to believe him.
Alex’s hand slid to the back of her neck. “Do you trust me?”
Emily’s chest rose and fell in uneven bursts. “Yes.”
Alex’s gaze darkened. “Then let me handle it.”
Emily’s mouth parted, but before she could speak, the doorbell rang.
Emily’s head whipped toward the door. Alex’s gaze sharpened.
“I’ll get it,” Alex said.
“No,” Emily said quickly.
But Alex was already walking toward the door. He opened it and froze.
Daniel stood in the hallway, his arms crossed over his chest. He smiled thinly.
“Well,” Daniel said coolly, his gaze flicking toward Alex. “That didn’t take long.”
Alex’s jaw tightened. “What do you want?”
Daniel’s smile didn’t reach his eyes. “I think you know.”
Emily’s heart slammed painfully as she stepped forward. “Daniel, stop.”
Daniel’s gaze flicked toward her. “He’s not family, Emily. He doesn’t get to be involved.”
Alex’s mouth curled into a faint, dangerous smile. “That’s funny, considering how badly you’ve already failed at being a husband and a father.”
Daniel’s gaze sharpened dangerously.
“Careful,” Daniel said softly. “You don’t want to make this harder for Emily than it already is.”
Alex stepped forward, his body radiating quiet fury. “No, Daniel. You don’t want to make this harder.”
Daniel’s smile thinned. “I think you’ll find I’m very good at getting what I want.”
Alex’s mouth curved faintly. “So am I.”
The tension in the room was razor-sharp.
Daniel’s gaze lingered on Alex for a long moment before turning toward Emily.
“I’ll see you in court,” Daniel said coldly.
Emily’s breath shook.
Daniel walked away, his polished shoes clicking down the hallway.
Alex closed the door behind him and turned toward Emily.
Emily’s arms wrapped around herself. “He’s not going to stop.”
Alex’s eyes darkened. “Neither am I.”
Emily’s chest tightened painfully.
“You can’t fight him,” Emily whispered.
Alex’s gaze sharpened. “Yes, I can.”
Emily’s throat tightened. “Alex—”
Alex’s hands closed over her face. His gaze was steady. “Emily, trust me.”
Emily’s breath trembled. “I’m scared.”
Alex’s hands slid down to her shoulders. “So am I.”
Emily’s eyes widened.
“But I’m not walking away,” Alex said softly.
Emily’s mouth parted.
Alex leaned down, his lips brushing her forehead. His arms wrapped around her, steady and warm.
Emily’s eyes slipped shut.
For the first time in a long time, she let herself lean into someone else’s strength.
And prayed it wouldn’t destroy them both.
