The next day at work was much better. Gerry was off for the day, and the air in the office felt so much lighter. He did, however, leave a stack of files on my desk with a note saying they needed to be done by tomorrow or else...If he had been standing here, I would have told him to fuc.k off! But he wasn't.
I spent all day with my face buried in these files. I barely even talked to Collin. It made the day go by faster, and I even forgot to take lunch. Luckily Collin brought me some food and coffee so I could keep going. Anna and Damien had been texting me all day, and I had to send them quick texts letting them know I was busy.
When Collin came by, I was leaning back in my chair, trying to stretch my back. I felt bad that we had a day where we could have talked without being in trouble, and I hardly said a word to him all day.
"Well, that's me done for the day. Are you coming? Wanna go get a drink?" he asked me.
"Ugh! Is it time to go already? I feel like I hardly made a dent in the stack" I was so frustrated with some of these.
A lot of these were missing signatures, and most were from Gerry. There was not much more I could do for them until they were signed. I still have 15 more pages to go through from this file. I decided to get it over with and just work late.
"No, I'm going to finish this file before I leave. It will be one less to do tomorrow," I sighed heavily.
"Oh, come on! You have been working on them all day. You need a break," he said, exasperated.
"We con tomorrow. I'll finish these today, so I don't have much to do tomorrow. I'll even let you buy me a drink," I laughed, hoping he would understand.
He sighed and rolled his eyes," Fine, but now you have to have dinner with me also," he grinned when he walked away.
"It's a deal!" I yelled out to him before he left the office.
I sat there and worked on the last file for a while. Whoever had written this contract didn't spell check themselves, and it was hard to read. Anna had kept calling me, so I had to answer her finally.
*Phone call
Anna: Where are you?
Katie: Still at work. Why?
Anna: Why are you still at work? You should have been home by now.
Katie: Gerry gave me a massive stack of files to get through while he was gone. I'm finishing up this last one, and then I will leave.
Anna: Damien was talking about going out to dinner again. Do you want me to tell him or will you call him?
Katie: You can tell him. I'll just text him when I can. I'm surprised he keeps wanting to hang out so often.
Anna: I think he really likes you. We were in a meeting for about 3 hours, and he kept checking his phone like every ten minutes! Nick called him out on it, and it was so funny to watch.
Katie: That's funny. I like him too.
Anna: I heard you stayed late at the restaurant last night...
Katie: um... I think I should get going.
Anna: Don't you dare! Spill!
Katie: *sigh* the s*x is sooooo good!
Anna: *screaming* I knew it! We need a girls' night again! Tomorrow?
Katie: Yes, we do! But I have plans for tomorrow already. Collin wanted to get drinks today, but I told him no because I wanted to get this done first. So I told him we could tomorrow, and he added dinner to the deal.
Anna: You better tell Damien. Collin may be gay and all, but he is still a guy.
Katie: I'm not cheating on Damien. We aren't even dating or anything. But I will let him know.
Anna: I know, I know, but he is attached to you, and I would hate for you to lose him. You have been so happy this week.
Katie: I know. Don't worry.
Anna: Okay, let me know when you get home!
Katie: I will.
After we hung up, I went back to the last two pages I had on this file; it wouldn't take me long to finish them.
The lights in the office had finally gone off. They are set on a timer, and after a specific time, they become motion activated. I was gathering my stuff when I heard the ding of the elevator. I knew Manny was coming to clean the office, so I called out to him to let him know I was there. Manny had been the janitor for the past ten years here in this building. He was such a nice guy. Manny and his family were waiting for their green cards to be approved. Mr. Johnson, the owner of this practice, helps with a lot of immigration cases and allows some families to live in his apartment building and work for him when they need some help. He was a fantastic boss and a huge reason I wanted to work here. Had I known that I would be working under Gerry, I never would have taken the job.
I started walking to the door and stopped to look around; I didn't see his cart anywhere and thought that was odd. I was waiting at the elevator and just had a weird feeling that someone was watching me. The hair on the back of my neck was standing up.
I got in the elevator as soon as it opened and pressed the button as fast as possible. Something in me was screaming just to run or use the stairs. I breathed a sigh of relief when the doors started to close. When the elevators began to move, I pulled out my phone and sent a text to Anna letting her know I was leaving right now and would call her when I got to the lobby because I felt weird.
I had just put my phone back in my purse when the doors opened. It opened to a floor that wasn't used and was under construction. There was no one standing there waiting, so I stuck my head out to make sure. The floor was dark except for a few emergency lights on. My anxiety kicked into high gear. This all felt wrong. Before I moved back, I saw a shadow move quickly up to me from the side. A hand shot out, grabbing me and covering my mouth as I let out a blood-curling scream. A hand came up to my neck, and I felt something sharp against my neck, and my blood ran cold. I froze and held my breath, waiting for whatever they would do.
"Don't scream, or I'll slice your throat, and no one will ever find your body. Do you understand?" The voice asked me. He whispered against my ear, and I couldn't make out whose voice it was. I was absolutely terrified. I could feel tears running down my face, but I made no move to get away from him.
I nodded my head and quietly said, "yes."
His hand covering my mouth moved away for a second and then came back with a rag in his hand. I knew at that moment this was about to get very bad. He covered my mouth before I could even move. I had only seen this in movies, but I knew without a doubt he was using chloroform. My last thought before I blacked out was, thank God I told Anna I would call her.
*Damien
I wouldn't lie when Anna told me that Katie didn't want to go to dinner, I was disappointed. This woman had gotten under my skin somehow, and I couldn't get her off my mind! I kept texting her, and she wasn't responding, so I decided to do the most logical thing I could and went to her apartment. I knocked on the door and waited for all of 3 minutes before I called Anna.
Anna: Oh God, I'm so glad you called! Have you seen Katie?
Damien: No! I'm here at her apartment, and she isn't answering the door or her phone. I was calling you to see if you knew where she was.
Anna: She was supposed to call me hours ago! She was leaving work late and said she would call me when she got home, and I was expecting her to call me at least two hours ago.
Damien: Meet me at her office.
I hung up before she could say anything back. I had my security call Nick and some other of my guards to meet us there. I even had some connections with the police and called them. Even if this was an overreaction and she fell asleep at her desk, I would take no risk with that. We were at her office within 15 minutes.
The moment I saw her car still there my stomach filled with dread. We waited in the lobby for everyone to arrive which was only a few minutes. Anna and Nick arrived at the same time and when I told them about her car still in the lot Anna looked on the verge of tears.
We asked the security guards at the building there but none of them noticed anything wrong. They didn't look like they amounted to anything as guards but I had some men go with them to look at their cameras. The rest of us took the elevators to her floor. There was a sound of a vacuum running in her office so the idea that she would be sleeping was almost gone.
The man doing the cleaning turned around and saw us all standing there and went pale. I'm sure we were a sight to behold.
"¿Hola hablas ingles?" I asked him.
"Sí señor," he replied nervously.
"Do you know this woman?" I asked and showed him a picture I had on my phone of Katie.
"Oh, yes. She is so nice to me. Always leaving me and my family treats. What happened? Is she okay?" he asked and was clearly worried about her.
"When was the last time you saw her? Where is her desk?" I asked him.
"It's been a few days since I saw her in passing. Her desk is this way," he lead us to her desk and nothing looked like it could be out of place. There was a large stack of files on her desk which I was sure was the reason she was late leaving work.
"Hey boss, the guys downstairs said the cameras went out for a few minutes a couple of hours ago. They didn't think anything of it because they had been doing that for a while now because of the construction a few floors down," Sam one of my guards told me.
"Oh, God!" Anna started to cry and Nick wrapped his arms around her.
I was fuming now. How could she just disappear like that! And who would dear to take her!?
"Anna, do you know anyone who would want to harm Katie?" I asked her.
"No! Everyone loves Katie. I can't think...Oh, wait! There is Gerry! He is her boss. The one who found out everything. She said he wasn't here today..." Anna looked so worried I was about to have Nick take her home.
All I had to do was look at Sam and he just called out "Got it!" as he picked up his phone to make calls.
By now there was a group of people here and some off-duty officers I knew. Some went to buildings around this one to look for cameras that may have shown her leaving or someone else coming in. The owner of the building was coming and the owner of the law firm she worked for was also coming.
We decided to start looking on all the floors to see if she got off somewhere else. I was starting to feel sick to my stomach at the thought of what could have happened to her. No one knew that I was seeing anyone so it was hard to think this was about me. I knew that she had just left a relationship but it was hard to think her ex would go to this extreme this fast. Unless there was something she wasn't telling me.
"Anna, is her ex still talking to her?" I asked her just to make sure.
"No, she blocked his number. I doubt he would do this. The man was so dry and had no imagination," her answer confirmed what I suspected.
Sam had given me an earpiece so I could talk to everyone without having to call them. I began to hear a commotion on someone's end and it pulled my attention away from asking Anna questions.
"Boss, you better get down here. Floor 7." one of my guards called me.
"We are on our way," I told him over the radio.
"Maybe just you for now boss," he said and I got the hint to keep Anna away.
My stomach dropped. If she had been killed I would hunt this motherfucker down and burn him alive!
*Katie
I woke up, my heart pounding. I could feel a table under me and my arms and legs were chained down. I lifted my head up to see if my clothes were on still but my head felt so heavy it just made me dizzy trying to move. There was a breeze on my body and it told me enough. I wiggled my body a little and felt the pressure of a bra on and maybe underwear. So I hoped nothing happened. I felt tears leak out and I began to shake in fear.
"I see you are awake. It's about time!" a voice said from a distance. We were still on the same floor from what I could tell.
He walked up to me but he had a mask on that completely covered his face except for his eyes. It was so dark in the room that I couldn't tell what color they were.
"Your body is better than I imagined it would be," he said and ran his hand across my stomach making me jerk away. His hand flew out and slapped my face hard.
"Don't do that!! One day you will love my touch," he said and then ran his hand across my nipple.s and I tried hard not to jerk away again.
"See, you are already learning. That was fast," he said and I could tell he was smiling, it made me sick.
He kept moving his hand on my breast and I couldn't help a whimper slip out. My tears ran freely down my face but I bit my lips to keep a cry in. His hand flew up and slapped me again.
"I don't want you to cry. Stop it! This feels good. Don't I do it just like him?" he sounded angry now. He must mean Damien.
"What do you want? Please let me go?" I begged.
"I don't know who you are but people are expecting me to call them and will come looking for me," I tried to force confidence into my words hoping he would believe me. I knew Anna would expect me to call but who knew how long she would wait.
"Oh, I know. I don't plan on keeping you long. This is just a warm-up," his voice was sick. His hand began to move again all over my body. When his fingers reached my panty line I jerked away. I would not let him do this to me.
His hand flew up again and this time he punched my face. I pushed against my cuffs trying to fight him off but I could barely move. He hit me one more time and I started to feel dizzy.
"You will learn to love this!" he shouted. His hand went back for only a moment and then he turned around fast looking at something behind him. He walked away and shouted for a moment. When he came back he had a rag in his hand and I instantly got scared.
"No! No please!" I begged and screamed.
"They got here faster than I thought they would. Guess this party is over. For now," he said sickly.
"Don't worry. I recorded our time together so I can watch it over and over again. Even your boyfriend can watch it. Night, night baby. Soon you will be mine!" he laughed as he put the cloth over my face again and I soon faded into darkness again.
