Cade felt it before he heard the knock. A shift in the air, an old instinct curling through his muscles like static before a storm. He sighed, running a hand over his face before pushing himself off the couch. He hadn’t slept, not really. He never did anymore. The knock came again—harder this time. Cade opened the door, already knowing who he’d find standing there. Sheriff Daniel Crowe. They hadn’t seen each other in over a decade, not since the night Cade left Black Hollow and swore he’d never come back. Yet here they were. Daniel’s eyes were sharp, searching, like he already knew the answer to the question he was about to ask. “There’s a body out by the river,” Daniel said. “Looks like something tore him apart.” Cade held his gaze, his expression unreadable. “And you think I know something about it.” Daniel exhaled, rubbing the bridge of his nose like he was already exhausted by this conversation. “I don’t believe in coincidences, Cade. You show up, and the killings start again.” A muscle twitched in Cade’s jaw. “I didn’t kill anyone.” Daniel narrowed his eyes. “Then tell me—what the hell is out there?” Cade glanced past Daniel, toward the treeline. The forest stretched out beyond the town, black and endless under the night sky. And somewhere in that darkness, something was waiting. Something Cade had spent ten years trying to outrun. But the past always caught up. And this time, it had teeth.
