Chapter Five

Aria groaned as she tried to ignore her sister’s obnoxious singing as she puttered around below. Aria grabbed the straw pillow and covered her head with it, in hopes that it would block Rhosyn out. “Why?!” Aria threw the pillow at the wall in frustration. Why did her sister have to be up at the crack of dawn, much less singing? Did she not understand people were still trying to sleep? Aria tossed the thin blanket off and got up. Quickly threw on a soft pair of leather trousers and a white blouse with a corset. She grabbed her long fur cloak from the back of the door and left the room. Aria closed the door before making her way down the stairs to stare at her sister who was dancing around the kitchen. The smell of a fruit pastry wafted through the air, making Arias' stomach growl with hunger. Subconsciously, Aria placed her hand against her stomach. “Aria!” Rhosyn called out. A bright smile plastered across her beautifully structured face. Excitement and happiness danced within her violet eyes. “You’re awake. Come break your fast.” She grabbed a plate filled with meat, cheese and fruit, placing it on a wooden table with a goblet of liquid. Aria sat down, mumbling a thank you before eating. “What are you so peppy this morning?” She said around a mouthful of food. “Aria, where are your manners? Did mom not teach you better?” Rhosyn scolded as she sat down with her own plate. “It’s Saffir’s season today. I thought I’d make her a peach pie to celebrate.” Aria froze, “Those peasants you hang with?” Rhosyn glared at her, “They are not peasants. Not any more than we are.” “Rhosyn, as you like to always remind me, we weren’t born as peasants.” Rhosyn shoved her chair back, and pulled the pastry out of the stove. “Yes well, it’s been eighty seasons and no changes. This is our life now. It’s just time to accept it.” she sighed. Aria watched Rhosyn place the pastry in a wicker basket, silently rejoicing in her sister’s words, “Are you sure? I know how much it means to you.” “Yes well, I can do good here too.” Rhosyn turned around, “I’m off to see my friends.” She put her cloak on, “don’t forget to drink your goblet! It had better be empty when I return home.” Aria stared at the goblet with her face scrunched up in disgust when the sound of the door opening reached her ears and she realized something. “Wait, Rhosyn, where is - “ Aria trailed off as Rhosyn had disappeared out the door. She would never understand why Rhosyn was all about people. If it was herself, she would hide away and avoid people as much as she could. The afternoon light shone through the lone window in the kitchen. Aria glanced around the house, two rooms were adjacent to the massive room that they used to cook and eat in. They lived in the blacksmith's shop where Telsa did her work. Aria grabbed the goblet and shuddered before chugging it back, grimacing at the taste. She got up and grabbed the small dagger that hung by the front door before exiting the house. Walking into the blacksmith shop, she noticed Telsa wasn’t there. Where was she? And where was Graver? She walked around the shop, making sure Telsa and Graver weren’t around. She stopped at the door and smiled. With everyone out, she could finally test her skills she’d been fine-tuning for the last two years. She hesitated, realizing that walking out of here like this, was just too easy. Aria raised the fur hood up and over her white hair, hiding her dark purple eyes and pointed ears deep within, before slipping out the door and onto the busy street.
