Acting almost on instinct, the machine-gunners and riflemen centered around me discharged their weapons in unison, knocking down the Iberian lookouts before they knew what hit them. The loud noise nearly deafened us, and the muzzle flash coming out of the heavier weapon incidentally put a marker on where we were. Puffs of dust from the Iberian bullets striking the brick walls above our heads firmly placed the real sense of war I seemed to have forgotten. I had always favored a more frontal approach where we and the enemy both faced each other with a sword and shield in hand. But being shot at from a distance and by someone, for some reason to me, it seemed oddly strange. Modern warfare was terrifying, and I hated it with every fiber of my being. “That MG nest has us pinned down!” J
