The ancient darkness rose from beneath the shrine.
Stone shattered around it.
Kael immediately stepped in front of Liam, his black wolf snarling as the creature dragged itself through the opening beneath the altar.
It was not a wolf.
Not completely.
Its body was made of black smoke and twisted shadows, but beneath the darkness were pieces of something that looked almost human. Long claws scraped against the stone floor. Red eyes opened in the smoke.
Darian stumbled backward.
For the first time, fear replaced the confidence on his face.
“No,” he whispered.
The Shadow Wolf moved between the creature and Liam.
Its silver eyes burned.
The blood must not fall into darkness.
Darian looked at Liam.
“Give me your blood!”
He lunged.
Liam reacted before he could think.
He grabbed the silver blade lying beside the altar and blocked Darian's attack.
Steel struck steel.
Darian pushed him backward.
“You don't understand what you are!” he shouted.
Liam gritted his teeth.
“Then stop trying to use me and tell me!”
Darian swung again.
Liam ducked.
The blade passed over his head.
He drove his shoulder into Darian's chest and sent him crashing against the stone wall.
Kael's wolf attacked the shadow creature.
The shrine exploded with sound.
Claws tore through smoke.
The creature struck Kael across the chest, sending him crashing into a pillar.
“Kael!”
Liam turned.
The Shadow Wolf suddenly appeared beside him.
Its voice entered his mind.
Do not fight the darkness with fear.
Liam looked at the creature.
His birthmark burned.
Then memories flooded his mind.
He saw his father.
He saw Kael's father.
They stood together inside the shrine years ago.
They weren't enemies.
They were protecting something.
Liam watched his father place a small child into the arms of a woman.
The child was him.
His father looked toward Kael's father.
“Keep him hidden.”
Kael's father nodded.
Then Darian appeared.
The black-stone ring was on his finger.
He attacked.
Kael's father stepped in front of Liam's father.
The blade struck him.
Liam's vision changed.
He saw Kael's father falling.
He saw Darian fleeing.
Then he saw something neither man had expected.
The Shadow Wolf appeared.
It stood over Liam's father and protected him.
The memory faded.
Liam fell to his knees.
Everything suddenly made sense.
The prophecy.
The mark.
The attacks.
His father's disappearance.
Kael's father's death.
They had all been connected.
Darian hadn't wanted to destroy the Lunar Blood.
He wanted to control it.
And the Shadow Wolf wasn't the enemy.
It was the guardian.
Liam stood.
“You lied to us.”
Darian froze.
“What?”
“You said Kael's father killed my family.”
Darian's face twisted.
“He wanted your blood.”
“No.”
Liam raised the silver blade.
“He protected it.”
Kael pushed himself away from the broken pillar.
“Liam.”
Liam looked at him.
“My father protected yours.”
Kael's expression changed.
“What?”
“Your father wasn't hunting my family. He was protecting me.”
Darian screamed.
“Enough!”
He charged.
Liam met him halfway.
Their blades collided.
Darian was stronger.
But Liam was faster.
His wolf moved with a precision he had never known before.
Darian struck his shoulder.
Liam twisted away.
He drove the silver blade into Darian's hand.
Darian screamed and dropped his weapon.
The black-stone ring rolled across the floor.
Kael saw it.
His eyes darkened.
“That ring.”
Darian looked toward the exit.
Kael moved faster.
He caught Darian by the throat and slammed him against the wall.
“You were there.”
Darian struggled.
“Yes.”
“My father.”
Darian smiled despite the Alpha's grip.
“Your father discovered the truth too late.”
“Who killed him?”
Darian's smile disappeared.
“The one he feared.”
Kael's claws pressed against Darian's throat.
“Name him.”
Darian laughed.
“You killed the wrong enemy.”
Before Kael could force another answer from him, the shrine shook violently.
A deep c***k spread beneath their feet.
The Shadow Wolf turned toward the darkness.
Its fur rose.
The first seal is broken.
Liam looked at the creature beneath the shrine.
“What is it?”
The Shadow Wolf's silver eyes moved toward him.
Something older than your pack.
The darkness surged upward.
Kael grabbed Liam.
“Run!”
They raced toward the entrance.
Behind them, the Shadow Wolf attacked the creature, buying them time.
Darian tried to escape.
Ronan appeared at the entrance with several warriors.
“Darian!”
The betrayer stopped.
Ronan tackled him.
Within seconds, Darian was restrained.
Kael pulled Liam outside.
The moment they crossed the entrance, the shrine collapsed behind them.
A wave of dust and stone swept across the forest.
For several seconds, nobody moved.
Then Liam felt Kael's hand around his.
He looked down.
Their fingers were intertwined.
Kael didn't let go.
“Are you hurt?”
Liam shook his head.
“You?”
Kael glanced at the blood covering his chest.
“I've had worse.”
Liam frowned.
“You always say that.”
Kael almost smiled.
Then his expression became serious.
“I need to tell you something.”
Liam waited.
“I was afraid.”
“Of me?”
“Of what loving you would cost.”
Liam's heart tightened.
Kael stepped closer.
“When I discovered you were my mate, I remembered the prophecy. I thought if I rejected you, I could keep you away from whatever was coming.”
“You hurt me.”
“I know.”
Kael's voice broke slightly.
“And I'll regret it for the rest of my life.”
Liam stared at him.
Kael lowered his head.
“I don't want to hide you anymore.”
Liam's eyes softened.
“What do you want?”
Kael took his hand.
“You.”
The word was simple.
But it carried everything.
Liam stepped closer.
“You rejected me.”
“I did.”
“You told me to stay away.”
“I was wrong.”
“You hurt me.”
Kael nodded.
“I know.”
Liam looked into his gray eyes.
“And if I choose you?”
Kael's thumb brushed over his hand.
“Then I'll spend the rest of my life proving I deserve you.”
Liam's wolf stirred.
The broken bond between them pulsed.
Warmth spread through his chest.
The pain left by Kael's rejection began to fade.
Liam smiled faintly.
“Then don't reject me again.”
“I won't.”
Kael pulled him into his arms.
For the first time, Liam allowed himself to rest against him.
The Alpha's scent surrounded him.
Pine, smoke, rain, and home.
By dawn, the surviving members of Blackridge gathered in Moonstone Hall.
Darian was brought before the pack in chains.
Ronan placed the black-stone ring on the table.
Elder Orin stepped forward.
“The truth can no longer remain hidden.”
He told the pack about the ancient Lunar Blood.
About Liam's family.
About Kael's father.
And about the betrayal that had begun years ago.
Darian's crimes were exposed.
The pack finally understood why the attacks had happened.
They had never been random.
Someone had been trying to reach Liam.
Kael stood beside him.
Then he turned toward the pack.
“Liam Moon is my mate.”
Whispers filled the hall.
Kael didn't step away.
“I rejected our bond because I was afraid of what it meant. I was wrong.”
He looked at Liam.
“I will not hide him again.”
Liam reached for his hand.
The pack fell silent.
Then Elias stepped forward.
He looked at Liam, then at Kael.
“If you hurt my brother again, Alpha or not, you'll answer to me.”
Kael nodded.
“Fair.”
A few wolves laughed nervously.
For the first time in days, the tension in the hall broke.
Liam looked down at his collarbone.
The crescent mark had changed.
A black wolf surrounded by silver flames now rested beneath his skin.
His hidden power was no longer something he feared.
It was part of him.
And he was finally ready to discover what it meant.
Later that evening, Liam stood with Kael outside the mansion.
The mountains were quiet.
Kael looked at him.
“Do you regret choosing me?”
Liam smiled.
“Ask me again tomorrow.”
Kael laughed softly.
Then Liam's smile disappeared.
A deep rumble rolled through the mountains.
Both of them turned.
The earth split open in the distance.
A red light rose from beneath the mountain.
The Shadow Wolf appeared on the ridge.
Its silver eyes locked onto Liam.
Its voice echoed inside his mind.
The first gate has opened.
Liam's blood turned cold.
Kael stepped closer.
“What did it say?”
Before Liam could answer, another voice came from beneath the mountain.
Deep, ancient, and hungry.
The true war begins now.
The red light exploded across the sky.
Far beneath Blackridge, something enormous opened its eyes.
And this time, Liam knew one thing for certain.
The enemy they had defeated had never been the real enemy.
The war had only begun.
