The sun was setting as Emma stepped off the train and onto the platform of the small town's train station. She took a deep breath, the cool breeze hitting her face, and took in her surroundings. The station was small and quiet, a few other passengers disembarking from the train before it chugged away, leaving her alone. She was surprised to see that there wasn't a taxi or car waiting to pick her up, as she had expected her uncle to send someone to meet her.
As she began to gather her things and look for a phone to call him, she noticed a man standing across the platform, watching her intently. He was tall and lean, with dark hair and piercing blue eyes. There was something about him that made her uneasy, but she couldn't quite put her finger on it.
"Excuse me, miss," he called out, his voice deep and smooth. "Do you need a ride?"
Emma hesitated, uncertain if she should trust this stranger. But then she realized she had no other way of getting to her uncle's farm, and she reluctantly nodded her head.
"Thank you," she said, walking over to him. "I'm Emma, by the way."
The man smiled, revealing perfectly white teeth. "I'm Jack. Nice to meet you, Emma."
As they drove towards the farm, Emma tried to make small talk with Jack, but he seemed content to drive in silence. She couldn't shake the feeling that there was something off about him, but she brushed it off as nerves and tried to focus on the passing scenery instead.
When they arrived at the farm, Emma was surprised to see that it was even more rundown than she had imagined. The fields were overgrown and the house looked like it had seen better days. She couldn't believe her uncle had let the place fall into such disrepair.
She was greeted at the door by her uncle, a tall and wiry man with a warm smile. He hugged her tightly, welcoming her to the farm.
"I'm sorry I couldn't send anyone to pick you up," he said, gesturing towards the driveway. "Our truck broke down last week, and we haven't been able to fix it yet."
Emma nodded, relieved to finally be here. She couldn't wait to start her new life on the farm and put her past behind her. But little did she know, there were unforeseen consequences waiting for her just around the corner.
