Celeste I pulled back an inch. I breathed. I became aware, slowly, of movement at the corner of my eye. Soldiers. Two of them. Stopped dead in the path between tents. Watching. One had his mouth open. I went scarlet from hairline to collarbone. Darien’s eyes were still dark. He did not care. His hands did not loosen. He looked down at me with the want banking slowly at the edges of his eyes and let out a long, rough breath. “How,” he murmured, “am I supposed to get any work done now. I am going to be replaying that all day.” “Darien.” “Repeatedly.” “People are looking.” “Let them.” “Darien.” He laughed, low. He did not let me go. I rested my forehead against his chest and waited for my face to stop burning. His hand came up and rubbed a slow circle between my shoulder blades.
