Chapter 10

I left discreetly so that no one would notice I was missing. I knew I couldn't be Luna of Arvel, but it had hurt. When they said that the goddess liked to play, they weren't lying. I had to admit, were it not for the circumstances of the revenge, I was ready to fall into Alpha Kain's arms. From the room I was in, I could still hear the applause and the celebrations. Having a Mate was always a cause for celebration, and I was sure there would be a huge party tonight. Wolves loved parties. Money and more money. After I'd managed to dry my tears and make sure my eyes were no longer red, I decided to leave the room. As soon as I turned the handle, I bumped into Arvel. “So you're here,” he said, gently pushing me inside, closing and locking the door, and closing any gaps the shutters might cause. “I'm sorry,” he repeated. Then he kissed me. At that moment I had no intention of stopping the kiss because I knew it would be the last time. I would stay away from Arvel as long as I could. We were excused from duty for the rest of the day. Alpha Kain had a Luna and that was all anyone talked about. I even heard comments about the first child. The wolf community valued an heir, and boys had always been raised to take over all the family business. Arvel was full of attention, which at least meant that he wouldn't have so much time to meddle in my life. I wondered if he had told Maya everything and if she knew what she was getting into. She belonged to a family from another town, which is why few of us knew her. I went home and took the longest shower I'd had all week. I took care of my hair with the best products, which were much better than Celeste's. I took care of my skin and prepared it with the best products. I took care of my skin and prepared my outfit for the evening party that had already been announced. The truth was that I wasn't going to the party unaccompanied. If Arvel had now tidied up and presented his new Luna, then I would show that I was happy and fine with it. A beta from one of the families was always courting me. He was the kind of handsome, polite boy who didn't want anything serious, just like me. Roger was his name. As expected, a few hours before, he had already sent me a message inviting me. For the first time in a long time, I accepted his invitation. Of course, the Kain family had rented one of the best places for the party. If it had been a wedding, they would have spent at least three times the amount. Roger was kind enough to pick me up from home. Edmon smiled when he saw me with Roger. They were friends, one of the Avilla's most loyal families. “I hope you take good care of my sister, Roger,” Edmon joked. If Roger and I had a Mate, my brother would probably set off fireworks. Of course, I'd be happy with someone like him. I mean, if the goddess wanted to give me a second chance mate, and make him Roger, I wouldn't complain. “Edmon, you know I'm not the type to compromise,” Roger replied. “At least, I don't intend to commit to anyone other than my Luna,” he said sincerely. “Maybe you'll find out that your Luna is Anna,” Edmon said, staring at me. “She hasn't had a Mate yet,” he said. I had to disguise the lie. No one was trustworthy enough for me to tell about myself and Arvel. “Come on, Roger,” I said, pulling him along. “My brother's talking nonsense,” I said as I entered the designated place. Most of the families had already arrived, and the main couple were welcoming the guests. If Maya had been wearing white, I could have sworn it was a wedding. For a few seconds, I wondered if it were me next to Arvel if they would be making such a fuss. “Hello, Roger,” Arvel said, greeting him. Luckily for me, Roger's family was positive about the Kain. The respect was mutual. If Arvel had been jealous to see me with him, he had disguised it very well. “You're in very good company, I see,” he said, looking at me with disdain. I think it would have been good for him to show that the hatred of Avilla was still there. I don't think he expected me to play along. “Too bad I can't say the same about Maya,” I said, greeting her. “You deserve better,” I said to her, who laughed. Arvel wasn't expecting that. Not wanting to take too long, I walked over and went inside. Roger followed me, and we went straight to the bar. “So, Anna, I don't remember if you use herbs in your drinks,” he said, visibly interested. Everything would be easier if Mate was with Roger. “I do, but not in the first few shots. I like to taste it first,” I told him. He then promptly poured me a glass of tequila without herbs and one for himself. “In that case, I'll accompany you on this adventure,” he said jokingly. I liked that guy. Arvel and Maya were hardly apart. Every minute, more and more families arrived to greet the couple. I heard from afar the lying story that they had bumped into each other at a business meeting, that their hearts had raced, and then Mate had happened. Pure lies. The original story, as well as being more intense, was much better. Who doesn't discover a Mate during a little s*x? I had already drunk four glasses of alcohol before finally accepting the herbal version. Roger seemed eager to start feeling the reveries. We danced for a while until the couple changed. Roger was already dancing with people whose names I didn't even know. By then, I was sitting at the bar, looking at everything, not even thinking about Arvel anymore—that is until he shamelessly sat down next to me. “If you're thinking of pissing me off and making me break this bowl of herbs, it's not going to work. Not this time,” I said, not making eye contact with him and taking a long sip. “I wanted to talk to you, Anna,” he said, having to raise his voice a little because of how loud the music was. ‘I planned to tell you everything before I showed her, but I was pressured,’ he said. “You don't owe me any satisfaction, Arvel,” I said. “Apart from a stupid contract, we have nothing,” I said, taking another sip of my drink. “Why don't you get out of here and go stay with Maya? She seems nice; I'm sorry she's involved in this s**t,” I commented. Maya didn't seem like the kind of person who would get involved in such a lying scheme. “Yeah, well, there's something about her; you need to know,” Arvel said. “But I can't tell you here; it's a secret. Let's go to the back,” he said, getting up. “I'm not falling for it. If it's a secret, you can type it,” I said, staring at the dance floor and seeing that Roger was changing partners once again. “I can't, Anna. Please come with me. I promise I won't do anything,” he said. I knew exactly what he was talking about. I sighed and sneaked out with him. At that point, no one cared about the main couple anymore, so it was easy. We closed the door. “Right, Arvel. What's wrong?” I asked, with my back to him, still drinking from the same glass. “She's pregnant,” Arvel said without hesitation.
