Chapter 08

I parked Arvel's car in front of the place. I needed to deal with the check-in first. Before I got out of the car, Arvel handed me his card and told me to use it. In a hurry, I went to reception and swiped the card. The attendant was a handsome young man and human. He was probably like my assistant; he knew everything about us and didn't care. I didn't have time to deal with trivial things. I ran to the car with the room key. Likewise, I drove the car to the garage closest to the room, which was on the first floor. Arvel was breathing heavily, and the smell in the air was even stronger. I had imagined that the Kain were stronger, but their power was only financial. The room was quite large. The motel was modest on the outside but looked beautiful on the inside. If it hadn't been for our desperation, I would have stopped and looked around more. “Anna,” I heard Arvel say as he closed and locked the door. “Have you made your decision?” he asked as he quickly removed his clothes. I thought a lot about letting Arvel transform, but a part of me screamed that it would be wrong. Definitely, in our time, the best thing about being a wolf was not being turned against your will. I was grateful to have been born at the time of evolution. I could imagine what it was like for Arvel, not being able to control himself. Not only that, but I sighed in response as I undressed. “I hope you learn to control yourself from now on. I'm not a s*x machine, and I don't intend to be,” I said. I wasn't very comfortable with the idea of doing that. Maybe revenge wasn't so necessary; maybe I'd just ignore Mate, and maybe I'd end that contract, even though it was made on my terms. Perhaps… “I'm not doing this on purpose,” he said, already completely naked and erect. “I hope I can do this with you out of necessity. I want to be with you when I'm not changing. If it's going to be a good experience, I'd rather it was just as myself,” he said. Then he approached me and, for the first time, kissed me. “Arvel,” I called out, pausing. “What's that?” I said. The kiss was good—how good it was. “We agreed it would just be s*x; we're not intimate; it's not supposed to be like this,” I said. “We agreed? I'm sorry, the contract wasn't that clear,” he said as he kissed my neck. Did I want to stop it? No, I didn't. I curled up in Arvel's arms, and he laid me on the bed, still kissing me. “You smell good, and you don't even smell like a she-wolf,” he said. He ran his fingers down my body as he kissed me. On top of me, he began to thrust, but lightly, gently. It wasn't cuddly on a comfortable level but on a level of pleasure and care. It was as if he was waiting for the right moment to feel it all. I began to wonder if there was any influence from Mate. I'd hate it if there was. Or maybe I'd hate the idea of knowing that I might like him even more. “Arvel, we can't. That should be enough,” I said, getting out from under him just before he or I came. “Your breathing has improved, and I think that's enough. Let's go,” I said, picking up my clothes from the floor. “What is it, Anna?” he asked, coming up behind me. ‘Don't tell me you don't want to,’ he mentioned. “Your smell, how you reacted, you feel something too; don't lie. For everything to work out, we must be honest with each other. I'm being honest. I want to kiss you, Anna.” “It's all an illusion, Arvel,” I said, getting dressed. “It's all an illusion because we have a Mate. This Mate makes us think that we are each other's soul mates. Well, we're not. I'm an Avilla, and the Avilla hate the Kain, and the Kain hate the Avilla,” I shouted. “We all know that.” “Not all the Kain hate the Avilla. I don't. I don't like your father, and I hate your brother; that's true, but it comes down to that. Likewise, I didn't lie when I said I was interested in you at the party,” he said. He used such a calm, serene tone that it made me shudder. It all rang true. If Arvel didn't hate Avilla, why should I pursue revenge? “I think I should have used a different approach,” I said. “Arvel, I was never interested in you. In fact, until the party, I didn't even know you were already the new Alpha Kain,” I told the truth. “I didn't expect to have a Mate with you.” “If you'd known that would happen, would you have done things differently, Anna?” he asked me. “You wouldn't have seduced me back or sucked me off? Do you regret it?” he wanted to know. His phone rang. He ignored it. I stood there, staring at him, not wanting to answer. I didn't know if I regretted it. I had been so focused on avenging the family, and the revelation that he didn't hate us was a shock. I had promised to take revenge; everyone expected it to happen eventually. “Aren't you going to answer it?” I wanted to know. His cell phone had rung in the car too, and I saw him sneakily ignore it. “It's not important,” he said, wanting to resume our conversation. “I want to hear your answer, Anna. I kissed you; I don't usually kiss,” he said. “You're an Alpha; every call can be essential,” I said, pointing to my cell phone. I wanted him to pick it up and focus on something else. He sighed, as if he wanted to refuse, but picked it up and answered. “Right, right,” he said after a while. “We can talk about it later; I'm busy,” he said. “I know, but she can wait, can't she? If you've found her and said she'll do it, then that's it. I get it; I know what I have to do, but it just can't be now,” he finished, hanging up. “So, what was it about?” I asked, with my back to him. “Work stuff?” I wanted to know. He sighed once more. “They've already found the person who's going to fulfill the other part of the contract,” he said, expressionless. “They were just warning me about the bureaucratic part. I have time to talk to her and explain everything, and about you,” he said. “That's great news; you've already got your Luna; you don't need me now,” I said, getting ready to leave. “Let's get on with it. If you require me, you'll call me, f**k me, and get out. Now, let's go,” I said. It would be better that way. One of these times, I'd get pregnant, and then I'd just have to finish my revenge. “Anna, please don't be like this,” he said, as he came closer to me. I already had my hand on the door, ready to open it. Somehow, my night had gone crazy. I wanted to believe that everything I was feeling was just for Mate. I wouldn't betray my family's principles for a destined companion. I couldn't do that. “And why shouldn't it be like this?” I asked him. “Because you're the one I want,” he finally said.
