Chapter SixteenThere was an eerie silence. Jack felt as though they had carried it back with them in the Land Rover with no-one speaking a word on the journey. Kitto’s absence had hung heavily on them in the confined space. Jack could sense Kiera’s concern and curiosity, but she hadn’t asked any questions. Once home, Kiera had taken her mother, Isabelle, straight upstairs to rest and Jack had slipped back outside to wait for Kitto.
