Chapter Twenty-ThreeJack awoke feeling uncharacteristically nervous. The room was in darkness and he waited for his eyes to adjust. Kiera was nestled underneath his arm, snoring gently, and he reached over and glanced at the clock. In a few hours’ time he had a meeting with Kitto, so that he could relay their progress and see if his friend could fill in any of their blanks. The thought of finding Kitto changed, or appearing ill or in bad spirits, made his stomach turn. The man had been a strong and important part of Jack’s life for many years and it would be difficult to see him suffer. Jack rose quietly from the bed, slipped on his clothes, then nudged Kiera awake, pulled a jumper over her head, strapped his board to the car and guided a sleepy Kiera to the passenger seat.
