Chapter Twenty-SixPatrick felt as though his heart was in his ears as he tried to walk quietly down the hallway. He was sweating profusely as he took hold of a door handle and gently pushed it open. A low hum of voices drifted over to him and he froze, before realising the sound was coming from the room at the top of the hallway, as the other Council members readied for the meeting. He needed to be quick, before he was missed. He stepped through the doorway and hurried over to the stairs that led down to the basement.
