We drove to school sticking to mundane, safe topics. I think my mother knew better than to keep pushing the mate issue.
As an omega, I really didn't see the need for me to go to high school. What did it matter if I got good grades or attended my classes? It's not like I got to decide my future - it would be decided by the head omega.
For an omega, once we graduate we spend a couple of months rotating jobs within the pack to find where we are best suited. Once we find a role we are suitable for, we are kept in that department. For the rest of our lives. Well, until we retire at least. Did I seriously need to spend 15 years of my life studying to be told I'm good with a mop?! I longed for more than that. I had so many ideas for how we could improve the pack - but nobody would care. That was a job for the alpha and luna.
A part of me envied our future luna. Lucas was obviously the most popular guy in school and all the girls fancied him. It wasn't even just because he was the future alpha - he was a grade A hottie. But a guy like that would never look twice at a lowly omega like me. It wasn't that we omegas were mistreated or anything, the Blood Crescent pack didn't stand for that kind of thing. It's just that we were in two completely different social groups.
I stared out the window as we pulled up outside the high school.
"I'll be working late tonight love, are you okay to get the bus home? Or a lift with a friend?"
"Yeah that's fine mom, I'll ask Trina to give me a ride."
I grabbed my backpack and jumped out, heading for the doors. As usual, my best friend Katrina was waiting for me there.
"Hey Trina, my mom is working late tonight so do you think I could grab a lift with you?"
Trina's mother had been an omega, and the childhood best friend of my mom. But luckily for her, she was mated to one of the pack warriors. They had a little more money than us, and so Trina already had a car. It wasn't anything too fancy, but it was certainly better than the nothing I was currently driving.
"Sure thing girl, you know I got you," Trina smiled back at me as we headed inside.
The hallways were packed and full of noise and movement, even more so than usual. We pushed our way through the crowds, trying to fight our way to our lockers. I groaned as I saw the banners and signs plastered across the walls and lockers.
'Happy 18th birthday Lucas'.
His birthday wasn't even today, it was tomorrow. But as today was the last day of school this week, the school wanted to be seen to be celebrating. They made a big fuss every year, but this year was especially important as our future alpha was turning 18 and could therefore find our future luna. It's all a load of rubbish if you ask me, but everyone else seemed excited so whatever.
"Cass?" I suddenly registered Trina speaking to me and awaiting an answer. "Hellooo?"
"Yeah hello, sorry, zoned out there for a sec," I blushed.
"So are we going to the party tomorrow? Since we are both still 17 and neither of us have a mate yet, we can be each other's plus ones!" Partying was never really my scene, but I didn't think it would look good to skip the future alpha's celebrations so I agreed to go.
There would be 2 parties - one held tomorrow for the pack to celebrate, and one the night after where alpha's and high ranking members of other packs would attend. It would be a very important event for inter pack relations, and all of the omegas would be working, including my mother. Coincidentally, that day was also my birthday. Lucky me to have my birthday totally overshadowed.
"Yeah sure I'll go, I guess I can pretend like it's my party and my birthday won't be totally lame."
